Hitting mats come in all shapes and sizes and as more golfers start to practice at home, the search for a quality product has never been more in demand. Ranging in price from less than $100 to several thousand, it is hard to figure out what is quality and what leaves a bit to be desired. This is where the Monster Mat steps in and is designed to offer a quality piece of equipment at a price that won’t break the bank.

After numerous requests by readers to give it a test, we had one sent to the THP Tech Studio, did some rearranging and gave it a spin. In the video below, we walk you through some of the basics as well as take a few swings and explain the feel through impact. After all, that is the most important aspect to any hitting mat.

Made in the USA, the Monster Mat features a 1 1/8″ Z-Pro fiber fortified hitting surface and comes in a 5’x5′ square that really gives you plenty of space for practice. The cost for the package shipped to your door? Under $400 delivered.

Have you been searching for the perfect mat to up your practice at home?

Good review there @Canadan. If I had the need for a mat this would be worth looking at.

We have tried a lot of inexpensive mats over the years and two things normally stand out. Either they are too hard and have a jolt on the body or too soft and you sink in a bit which @Canadan eluded to in the video. This had neither issue overall and was pretty rock solid.

Nice review. Seeing as how we are in the need for something new and different. Current sim has home made divot action mat with nice synthetic turf over it. That turf piece needs replaced periodically. Any idea of longevity on this mat with continued heavy use.

Not as of yet, but we will continue updating this as it gets more use. Based on their commercial application, I have no reason to believe it wouldn't hold up, but obviously testing will confirm that.

Looks good. Thanks for the review.

Great review Dan. If I had the need for a mat like this, it looks and sounds like this one would certainly be one to consider.

I looked on the website for warranty info. Didn’t see details. Might have missed it. Will do a little home inquiring.

I'm not exactly a mat aficionado, but the one I have here is hot trash compared to the monster mat. Your feet sink in a fair bit, there's not a ton of structure, it's just not great.

Really impressed with this one. Seems like great value too.

Nice review, and I agree with your comment about hard vs soft mats. Almost like there is a Goldilocks comparison somewhere here…

I’ll be interested to see how this one holds up. Although it’s a neat feature now in being able to track your club path, I wonder how that might impact longevity.

Nice write up. May be in market. Will consider. Thanks

Great review @Canadan ! Wish we had ceiling height in the office so we could use one. Well, we do for me, just not David.

Have you tried the country club elite mat? Interested in a comparison. I’m hitting off that mat on concrete in the garage. I have no complaints about feel or longevity, but I’m going to put some additional support underneath (thinking foam/rubber puzzle piece mats).

I have not personally.

Smart thoughts on the under. Even if it doesn't seem like it, I am sure that is beneficial.

This is a really nice review Dan.

It seems like for the price it is tough to go wrong with this unit at this price.

I know I'm talking apples to oranges here, but would you choose the large Fiberbuilt mat or the Monster Mat to hit off regularly for extensive testing, practice, etc.? Do you get similar club reaction on fat shots?

The experience is different, no doubt about it. The club head slides through a lot faster on the monster mat to me.

But also, we're talking about two totally different mats in different price ranges - so it's reasonable to expect different.

Can you elaborate more on the club head slides through faster? More or less like grass outside?

depends on the kind of grass hahaha - and the condition, honestly.

I think it's more of a friction thing. The club head hits and slides through quickly - almost in a slick fashion. -- Vs the alternative which would be a different material that does more to grab the club and less to deflect it.

About the green marks on the clubhead… easy to just wipe off with your hand? If you’re not doing it after every shot does it become more of an issue?

Thanks, one last question...if you were to take one really fat, would the club head bounce off the turf behind the ball leading to a "thin" shot or does the turf slow the club enough to get a "fat shot" feel?

I believe it would be less inclined than other mats.

Then again, what are we calling 'fat' shots? An aggressively fat shot on any mat is going to suck hahaha

True...I'm not talking about those pelt divots that fly farther than the ball

Just ones that are slightly fat that you know would get penalized enough out of the course to where you'd land in a bunker or water you were trying to carry
