Today I played the Peter Hay which is the newly Tiger Woods designed par 3 at Pebble Beach. One of my regular guys is a Dukes member, which is Pebble’s discount program, so gets some free rounds every year at the Hay. As I suspected, it’s not worth the $65 fee, although the starter did tell us weekends are packed, so I guess not everyone agrees with me about the cost. It means mondays you tee off mats just to give the tees some respite, although they are good mats. They have some spring to them, so not the rock hard mats you would find at your typical range.
As a course, it’s an interesting set up. Longest hole is about 110, but it’s all about the greens. Some serious slope on them, and you don’t hit the right part of the green, expect to 3 putt. Luckily the greens aren’t too fast or they would be unplayable. The second hole is a reproduction of the 7th at Pebble. Having played the hole twice, it does a good job of recreating the tee shot, although the green didn’t seem to mirror the 7th from my memory.
Tiger did a good job of making it fairly challenging. I started off pretty good but then collapsed. With the undulations in the greens and way the tee’s are, I found myself totally second guessing my distances, even when I lazered the flags. If you were coming from out of town, I guess it would be worth playing to kill an hour or so (what’s $65 when you are spending thousands to stay and play). As a local, I’ll play it again with my buddies dukes vouchers that he gets every year, but I won’t be using my own money to play it again.
