This has always annoyed me. If trees were two dimensional maybe, but they are three dimensional. So a plane ( 2 dimensions) may be 90% air but when your ball has to go through like 20 planes stacked on top of each other because it three dimensional its less than 10% air!

Correct.

The statement "trees are 90% air" is a popular but inaccurate saying, particularly in golf, according to a Golf Digest investigation. While trees do contain a significant amount of water, they are not primarily composed of air. A golf test showed that trees offer considerable resistance, and golf balls don't consistently go through them.

Here's a more accurate breakdown:
  • Trees are not 90% air:
This is a common saying, but it's not true. A Golf Digest investigation showed that golf balls hit into different tree types often don't travel through them, says Golf Digest.

  • Water content:
A living tree can be made up of more than two-thirds water by mass.

    • Other elements:
Besides water, trees are also composed of carbon (15-18%), hydrogen (9-10%), and oxygen (65-75%) by mass.
    • Resistance:
Trees provide a significant amount of resistance, making it challenging to hit a golf ball through them, according to Golf Digest.

yeah, it’s not meant seriously.

    • Oxygen production:
Trees are a vital part of the ecosystem, producing oxygen through photosynthesis, says the USDA.
So, they're up to 75% air.

So, they're up to 75% air.

The are tons of palm trees at my club, and it defies logic how a ball hit into one does NOT come back out! Where do they go?? (Maybe those golf ball retrieval companies go in at night and shake them loose???). I can concur that PALM trees are definitely not 90% air!

I always say they may be 90% air, but the 10% of tree covers about 90% of the window.

Regardless of the composition, I always miss the air part.

All I know is somehow that "AIR " in the trees is stopping and deflecting my ball :ROFLMAO: . I guess you got to talk to the trees, ( a tree talker LOL) and that means not cussing at the trees, and if you say good things about the trees when the ball is in flight, the trees might listen and give me a nice bump back into the fairway. ( joking really, but maybe ) . Last, week my ball was going pull left into this big old live oak, I said on come on help me out here please, my ball smacked this little 4 " limb and ricochet 25ft into the fairway. Thank you tree :ROFLMAO:

Some good responses. I'm glad we all are in agreement !!

The thing that defies logic is that a golf ball will seek out a single 1" limb every time. Literally a couple inches in either direction and you're home free, but it always clips a branch.

There are some people you know will be fun at parties.
Then there is the person that you ask for a beer and they tell you, they dont have beer, they only have IPA.

They are 90% air ONLY if your ball is heading out of bounds. They are 90% solid if you are trying to get OUT of the trees.

I always thought the idea of trees being 90% air was just a humorous remark, and not t be taken seriously. It always went along with the saying that "so are screen doors".

don't you dare get in the way of my optimism with your science.

Trees are 90% air. The problem is that the other 10% is pure unadulterated f**k you.

Maybe so but I've had many friends and playing partners that i believe actually think its true based on their comments and recovery attempts LOL!

Trees are definitely not 90% air.

In my experience, they are typically 90% tree.

Trees are 90% air, but take up 112% of my brain (which is also 90% air coincidently).

I believe when this phrase was coined many years ago, there was a spelling problem it was……..error not air

Haha palms are the worst. If you hit the “trunk” they scar the heck out the ball and if you get up top the ball has a high chance of getting stuck up in the palm structure where the leaves come out. It’s a classic lose lose situation.
