Sitting at the 19th hole on Saturday, @tanker337 turns to me and asks..."Do you want to play Troon North tomorrow? I can get a discount." Maybe it was the beer...no it was the course....I said yes in about 5 seconds.
This is an AZ bucket list course. It is always near or at the top of the best courses in Arizona. Winter rates can get rather high. For an afternoon round on the last day of July....it was reasonable even as a walkon. It is now firmly planted in the top 2-3 courses that I've played in Arizona, maybe even the top spot.
Conditions were lush. While most courses in Phoenix / Scottsdale have been baking in the heat of summer, this course was borderline soggy. There was a major thunderstorm that hit the area the night before we played. Dumping around 2 inches. (that's 25% of the yearly total from one storm). That only added to the water they utilize to keep this course in prime condition all year long.
What's the play like? Classic desert golf. With spectacular scenery. Lots of slope, obstacles, and challenge. We played the Silver tees (two up from the tips). 6220 / 69.8 / 132. With it being so lush, there was no roll. making it play even longer. I will post photos below. It's worth the price of admission. But with it being 25 mins from my house, I probably would not pay the $350+ winter rates.
Greens were about as perfect as bermuda could be. they rolled so pure. they were a bit slower than they looked. due to how soft they were. very receptive to approaches. but punishing if you missed the target. They could easily speed them up and bruise a lot of peoples egos.
