USA Men's Soccer National Team

I’m not the biggest Donovan fan, but he’s speaking truth here

Seems remarkably restrained.

Howard essentially calling Pulisic a p**sy was funny.

comes off like an NBA guy more worried about his next contract than winning

That's because if Landon goes too hard on Pulisic people will bring up his own sabbatical. Howard doesn't have to worry about that.

The United States, Belgium game viewership surpassed all non-NFL sports games over the past decade. There is mounting data that shows Soccer has passed hockey and as quickly approaching baseball in terms of popularity. Maybe the Talking Heads can leave behind the old trope that Soccer needs a watershed moment. And maybe, that will help the national team not play like a bunch of nervous goobers in the next big game that matters.

Not a great showing by Team USA in that game, hopefully it doesn’t have the opposite effect and turn first time viewers away from watching again in the future after possibly validating their thoughts about the team never being able to compete with elite competition.

I’m sure it lost some, but trends are strong.

Now if we could only get more academies to where we can actually compete for it all…

They need to find a way for that to translate to MLS. I don't know the marketing strategy but I know a lot of that viewership "bump" is the national team on a terrestrial channel and not cable or pay tv.

Follow the German model, Make every team have a viable youth academy if not they lose their license and MLS franchise. That can off set the pay to play issues as well.

It's kind of sad its easier for me to watch the PL or La Liga than it can be to watch MLS. I used to turn on random games to watch since the Crew were hardly on the national broadcast, but since the switch to Apple I've only watched highlights.

I think they made a Huge mistake when they signed Messi but put it behind a Paywall.
Huge miss signing the biggest star in soccer and then not letting people see it.

NO ONE but hardcore fans are going to pay to watch MLS.

Agreed completely, but this is a BIG change. Unfortunately, pay for play is here to stay and I don't see this changing anytime soon.

Amazingly convenient based upon how Christian Pulisic get slaughtered by fellow football players active, retired, commentating, male and female from all walks and then all of a sudden today's reports of him with a microfracture and bone bruise of tibia/fibula in right leg during loss to Belgium reports are emerging.

It will be interesting to gauge his return to AC Milan.

I mean, PL and La Liga are also more watchable of a product, which is why those are the leagues chosen by the easier to access channels.

Didn't you hear Alexi? Pay to play isn't the problem. Players just don't have enough heart.

This is why I hate Alexi.

He literally had a tweet that said "but who's going to pay for it then?"

Moron.

Kevin Frazier went in on him on the Dan Patrick Show and it was glorious.

Need to check that out

They now all do. Challenge is that's just 30 teams over this vast country with academies, plus some of the USL clubs. I read England, roughly the size of North Carolina, has over 150 academies.

I'm just not sure how to scale that model in any meaningful way.

Do you have Apple TV at all today? At least now it's not behind a second paywall like a few seasons ago.

Get Apple TV for your movies or sitcoms, and you have full access to any MLS game.

what channels are they on? I don't see them on over the air tv but than again, I am a MLS homer.

This is true, but more to the fractured nature that our system is. I don't feel like some of these academies are set up like the UK or German models. I think we are still missing something we can learn from them.

NBC and USA aren’t though.

And La Liga gets mainline as well as streaming. Hell, El Classico is regularly on ABC.
