You know that moment when everything just clicks?

It could be with a putt, a drive, an iron, a lesson, a range session, a round - everything just feels like it's doing the right thing..

How often do you experience it?
Have you experienced it lately?

I would say maybe a handful of rounds everything seems to click. In 90% of rounds I have at least 1 thing clicking

Currently feeling that my last couple practice sessions with irons. Hard to say if it’ll transfer from indoors to on the course, but have been roasting my irons this week.

Hasn’t been often that I’ve experienced it on the course, but the couple times I have I’ve shot an 81 and 85. On those rounds every iron was doing exactly what I needed it to do from a distance and control standpoint. Love those rounds and hoping to see more of them this year.

Maybe a few swings per round. A hole or two. If I’m lucky a stretch of holes.

Had a couple swings like that last time out but it’s been a while since it lasted long enough to do some decent scoring.

I cannot fathom this to be accurate. You're a solid player and I am confident you've had moments in time where certain clubs felt absolutely grooved.

Any thoughts on what is the real differentiator between sessions of practice and rounds of golf?

For me, a lot of the times I get lost in round trying to get to a number. It's the distance indifference of a range session that makes my swing easily to achieve.

Once every couple years I gets close.

Also 100% of the time I play against @MBrennanCG

Usually happens a couple times a year. It's a great feeling I wish would happen more often. I definitely have not experienced it lately and certainly not this past weekend haha

I’ve experienced it and it feels easy in a way if that makes sense typically feel like I’m fighting to make a good swing but on a rare occasion it’s there it just feels natural and like I’m just walking in a park of sorts vs the usual holding on for dear life trying to bandaid a swing to get a respectable score. Haven’t had it recently but feel I’m nearing one.

My first round of the year or after not playing for a little while. Typically when I have zero expectations.

The more frequent I play the more I think about things too much.

I dont feel like it has ever all been there. That is how I read it. Sure I have had days were I felt like maybe just one thing was off.

Probably a few times a round. Problem is stringing them all together at the right time. One time I'll come off the tee great for a few holes, then chunk the approach. Then a few holes later, I'll suck it up off the tee but find a way to pure an iron for a few holes. So my game may click at some points, but it probably sounds like a couple teeth are missing from the fly wheel in my clutch on my Camaro. Clutch is just slipping & slipping

I have a strong feeling I just end up thinking WAY too much when on the course. In practice, I’m playing simulated holes and shooting to targets, but there’s not the same “pressure” if you want to call it that lol.

The mental approach to the game is something I’m going to work a bit more on this year and then I’ve worked with swing coach through the offseason which does have my ball striking in a much better overall place than years past.

I think a big thing of it is turning the mindset from “can I do this?” to “I know I can do this”

I think it probably happens once or twice every few rounds. I’ve also had those “aha!” moments on the range when trying to fix something that seem to lock everything into place. I can’t wait for the first one this year because that’s one of those endorphin providers that’s worth chasing.

For me, I feel like it’s maybe once or twice a year. Most of the time it’s feeling confident with one part of the game for it to suddenly go haywire and the area I was struggling in prior suddenly feels good. But when it all lines up, it’s fun.

I've been playing golf for 19 years (started when I was 50). I've had everything click only twice. Both times I broke 70. The golf was almost effortless. I knew I'd hit fairways, I knew I'd hit greens, and make putts. I didn't have to think about anything. I'd step up to the ball and knew I'd be hitting a good shot. Been a long, long time since that happened.

The best stretch of golf i've ever played was last October, I played something like 9 rounds and was a cumulative -10 IIRC. Or something like that. It was just one of those stretches where i expected to hit every shot the way i wanted. I didn't make a ton of putts, but i'm not sure i lost a ball the entire month and probably averaged 14 greens or so

The back nine of my last round felt this way. Things just were easy. Drives were between the trees, irons had the hint of that sound, putts were rolling true.

Tends to happen most when I am in a relaxed state, just letting it happen.

Best feeling in the game outside of celebrating the great shots of your playing partners.

There is a weird thing about fall golf for me where I play better golf. I don't know if it's that my expectations are lowered or what it is, but it always seems to happen in September or later.

Think there's anything to that?

Not very often unfortunately. Usually a couple of shots a round but never a whole round.

My man.

More? Well it all started when I was a young boy... just kidding.

I'll just say that everything isn't clicking yet. Scoring will come, but execution on golf shots has to come before the numbers drop.
Here are some of the bigger changes that I've made since my last THP experience:

Backswing:
  • A more inside takeaway utilizing the shoulders to start the backswing while maintaining hand position. Previously would lead with arms and open the face
  • Feel of a 75% backswing length. The reality is that is a full backswing and previously I was John Daly'ing it up (sans the ciggs and women and drinking and)
Downswing:
  • Starting the downswing with my feet rather than my arms. In my backswing my lead heel comes up a little bit like playing baseball. Rather than starting to swing down with my arms first, I plant that heel back down which gets my hips engaged and creates better tempo. This also promotes not hitting at the ball as well as not relying on arms to generate power
  • Here's the biggest thing: doing less. I am a big strong boy and a tryhard. This leads to wanting to muscle the swing because noob golfer brain thinks "to make ball go far, must swing hard." This is incorrect. I am fortunate enough to have natural swing speed and it took swinging on a launch monitor to show me that I do not need to put any effort into the swing to generate club head speed plenty powerful enough to get the ball the expected distance. Trying less has been a tough change, but I have never hit the ball better in my life
Attitude:
  • Like I said I am a try hard. I want to excel. I know I have the potential to excel. I would get so wrapped up in doing well that I would be physically tense and angry. My Morgan Cup partners on day 2 can attest to this (they were extremely supportive shout out @CBaker ). Part of my campaign to 'try less' is psychological too. My friend and I have been working on having more FUN playing golf since late last year and keeping it lighter. Being looser is leading to playing better golf simply put.

What's left?
  • Infinite
  • I can still be handsy in downswing which causes a hook. This has been tempered some by moving to midsize grips and those have been very comfortable
  • Still early extend a bit which gets me toe-y and short
  • Alignment is a work in progress
  • Putting 6ft and in. I am terrible at practice, but I gotta eat my veggies and just do it
  • Breaking 90 again. I did it once and never sniffed it again. It's not a fluke and it's happening at least once more this year mark my words.

Everyone is different, but I relate to that aspect greatly.
