Picked up a bottle of Old Forester 1924 tonight. I've never been a huge OF guy but I hear great things about this release.

i really loved the 2024 release but the 2025 release disappointed me a bit. If I find a 2026 I’ll snag it to compare

Reviews I'm seeing of this release seem to make me believe this is the best of the 3. I passed on the first 2 when they were out but it was enough to get me to give this one a try.

Having a little Makers tonight. The heart release.

If you haven't had the New Riff 8 year get it. IMO it's the best thing they make that isn't a distillery exclusive release.
I’ll keep my eye open. I believe I’ve see it but have the regular and single barrel.

I have their Ohio exclusive Ripple Rye.

9 year old rye whiskey finished in maple syrup and Amburana.

It's like french toast whiskey. An acquired taste for many but if you want a dessert sipper it is quite good.
that sounds outrageously fun.

OHLQ shows some stores still have it in stock on their web inventory if you wanted to give it a try.

Their normal Ripple Rye releases are 7.5 years but this special one the did for Ohio is 9.

Frankly, once you finish it, their bottles are nice enough you could peel the label off and use it as a decanter for something else with the glass cork topper they use. I know Amburana is polarizing but the cinnamon characteristics blend well with the maple. It doesn't overpower but definitely gives a french toast vibe to me.

I've never tried anything with Amburana in it.

I don't see on OHLQ the 9 year.

Amburana is polarizing. Some like it, many don’t. I’m one of the latter.

what's your take on it?

I've watched plenty of videos where people have a very strong opinion either way.

The bottle actually has a blue label but this is it.

Amburana wood from brazil can give a very heavy cinnamon toast crunch character to whiskey if not used lightly or balanced out by something else. Some whiskey snobs downright hate it. I just accept it for what it is and can be creative and different if used properly.

It's really comparing apples and oranges to me. when it comes to whiskey. I don't expect it to taste like a fine standard bourbon profile.

Not a fan at all.
Always tastes artificial to me.
I avoid it at all costs

I don't believe I have either. Every bottle I've ever found finished with it costs more than I want to experiment on based on what I've heard.

It's a hell of a gamble for 105 lmao

It is what it is. I think its fine for what it is and like I mentioned, I think the maple prevents it from being overpowering. Its not an everyday drinker for me. Its just a preference thing depending on what I'm in the mood for.

Some days I want coke, some days I want Pepsi. Some days I'm in the mood for Wild Turkey and some days I want something lighter.

Most of my way too large whiskey shelf is built around trying new things and having different options. I have not tried anything else from Dark Arts but I know a lot of their stuff tends to be sort of experimental blends like that. I think their standard rye bottles on the shelves in Ohio are Amburana finished as well.

This one treated me well.
Very, very well.

Perfectly balanced on the nose and taste, with a slight lingering burn. For an old bourbon, this is a real achievement.

very, very much, liked the 18 year. Had it at the distillery and bought a bottle, and finished it already.

I have the 21 year now as well, but I think I like the 18 year better

Bottle of the day for @Canadan
Each day I’m going to post one he should get

Just poured myself some Buffalo Trace.

After all these other bottles I've tried recently, I am a bit surprised at how... reserved the flavor is.

Not much left in this bottle. It’s been quite good.

Since it’s almost St Patrick’s day.

Is it a super smooth fruity finish?
It is smooth with a fair amount of sherry at the end. But at 108 it’s not thin at all. Really easy to drink.

I love it when a bourbon kicks you in the forehead up front and then finishes super smooth. It's weird.
