Who Is The Most Overrated Golfer On Tour?

Tough question. There are a bunch of guys with serious credentials - major winners - who are still in the heart of their careers who haven’t done much in a while. Guys like Jason Day, Spieth, Rory, etc. Are those guys overrated because it’s been 3-5 years (or more) since they’ve been real threats or are they just passed their primes?

I don't think Jason Day is really thought of as a guy who could win anytime he tees it up anymore, the back injuries have taken that away. I agree that Spieth is now overrated, they love having the mic on him and Grellar when he is playing and he has one good round and it's all you hear about (and I like watching Spieth and hope he can turn it around) but currently he is overrated.

Today he is. He was probably one of the betting favorites for the Open and he had no shot. Don't get me wrong I love me some Tiger but it is what it is. I will consume any and all Tiger content but that makes him overrated.

Being a betting favorite has nothing to do with how good of a chance that he has to win the tournament. The casinos know that the betters will bet on Tiger matter no matter his odds and if they actually set odds properly and he won, it would be a significant loss.

I don't think anyone actually expects him to win in his current state.

Ricky is the popular answer but up until a month ago I would've voted Paul Casey. Now I may go Tommy Fleetwood. Both really likable guys who just couldn't win on the PGA Tour.

My vote would be Sergio Garcia, he never lived up to the hype about him.

Golf is hard, nothing like doing well in the past but just OK in the present. Expectations, potential, success in the past makes a heavy load to carry, more so when the GC keeps building them up every event. I think Rickie is overrated, even though I like him.

For me it’s between two of my favorites, Rahm and Morikawa. I expected them to be 1 and 2 in the world and winning like crazy this season. When someone asks me the best player in the game those two still immediately pop into my mind but it just hasn’t been the case this season.

I would have said Finau until his back to back.

Currently, anyone that thinks Tiger can contend right now is delusional. I know I am going to get mud, rocks, and poop thrown at me for that one!

Depends on the context , is it winning / or consistent results ? Etc , and some players have valid reasons ,
jday is physically struggling which leads to snippets of brilliance and periods of physical incapacity , not ideal for tournament play
Others have individual reasons , and potentially reasons that are undisclosed.

In a game that millimetres can be the difference between 1 and nothing , where hundreds on shots are played and the bounce can be all , it’s more and more difficult to dominate for any length of time considering skill set and depth of fields .. if you make it to that level you have extreme skill and ability

As for overrated in the context …

Current season it's Tiger Woods and I don't even think it's close?

I'd put Jordan Spieth up there as well. Most sports followers probably know his name, he gets a decent chunk of coverage still and the dude has had two pretty mundane wins in 5 years?

Every time an overrated thread is created, I say to myself, I don't think that word means what people think it means. No idea how Will Z. or Xander are being classified as overrated. I almost never hear about them in any mainstream sports media. I'd say the average golfer wouldn't even bring them up if I was to tell them to mention 20 golfers, I'd say both of those guys are UNDERATED in exposure, current media and how little they are talked about for the amount of Top 10's and exceptional play they've had this season.

Oof you hit us with the Spieth bomb. I love Spieth and I think you’re right.

Very tough crowd here. I guess most commenting forgot how hard it is to contend and win a PGA tour event, much less string together multiple wins over years. Those knocking Speith, I guess 13 wins/3 majors, 79 top tens in 225 starts over barely 10 years is "overrated" ...
Hype about a player and their potential is largely created by the media...they're constantly looking for the next ratings boost. The chances of another dominant and transformative player like a Tiger or Jack coming along anytime soon look slim, but there are plenty of great players out there to watch and the talent level has never been better.
My vote is is for Tiger...and it's purely a product of the media hype machine. Dude is lucky to be able to walk...I doubt he'll ever contend again.

From a contender standpoint it has to be Tiger, it’s sad to watch him hit bunker shots over the green and flubb chips like he’s doing

Take the cameras off him

P.S. I’m a big Tiger fan

Yea he was awesome 2017 and prior, and I think there's alot of people that have come into golf in the last 5 years, Me included, I've only been following golf for about 4 years now, and there is no one that gets more press, coverage and name recognition then him. And overall I just don't think he's lived up to the hype that stirs around him, and I really really like Speith. But it's an "overrated" thread, and yes, history matter, but at what point does that become overrated? I think he's there right now. But definitely debatable.

Overrated is a tough thing to justify...in contention but never wins? Always highlighted but never contends? Just don't like the guys?

Tiger has to be the top right now...all coverage minimal chance to compete

Jason Day is another that gets a good amount of coverage, but with a bad back doesn't usually string 4 rounds together (maybe a 3 round LIV event is better for him)

Rickie Fowler, likeable but not really contending
