Why aren't there any Maltby club reviews?

You might have a point there with the shaft. Personally, I'm not a shaft junky and don't believe they make that much a difference with glaring exceptions such as a slow swinger with limited speed and power using something like X100's in his irons. You've got to use a shaft suited to your abilities. With that said however, the DRT 48 degree I bought does have the stock Score shaft which is a very cheap shaft. Also, if I catch the ball out towards the toe using this wedge, the vibration is quite substantial and nothing like all my other wedges Cleveland, Vokey and even the Kirkland's and I can't see the Kirkland's using an expensive shaft.
I believe Kirkland uses a True Temper shaft.

I had the STi2 gen 1 irons, which are exactly the same as Gen2, just with a different glued on badge.

They are fabulous. I hit them the best of any iron set I've ever had. It was the gateway into Maltby for me. I built up a 7-iron head and was just striping it on the range first time out. Ordered the rest of the heads that night.

The only knock is they did not feel soft, as they are a cast club. But I was also comparing them against Srixon ZX4s at the time.

Good to hear! Had 6 shafts in the basement that deserve more than to be setting in the corner so Im going to put them back in play!

Don't hesitate. Just order up the heads. They are like $24 a head.

Due to the Callaway setup I am playing this year, I sold my set of StI2's for probably 70% of what I put into them. I don't think you will want to sell them though. They are great.

You are more than likely right, I am pretty much a club hoarder so I will prob not sell them. I own two other maltby iron sets so just another addition. I own Ke4 maxes and TS3 so I feel like these will probably set somewhere in the middle. Ordered the heads yesterday. @erock9174 planted the seed haha.

I also played the Gen 1. Gen 2 are a lot prettier. I'd say I lose a few yards compared to the JPX-921 Hot Metals but they're incredible value for the price.

Wondering if it's a loft and shaft difference. The STi2 are not as strong lofted as allot of the more modern clubs. Shafts would have allot to do with that as well. IMHO that is.

The STi2s (both gens) are great heads. I plan on making a backup/2nd set from them in the near future. They might be the best bang-for-your-buck heads around.

The STi2's are traditionally lofted irons, not jacked up lofts. The KE4 Max heads are the line that have stronger lofts.

My ZX4s were longer than the STi2s due to the lofts. The STi2s were more slightly more forgiving than the ZX4s as they are slightly longer heel to toe.

Maltby STI2 Gen in 60g Tensei Silver R flex I had pulled from something previously. Playing D1.5/D2 weighting.

Those look awesome! Report back on how you hit them.

Those look awesome! Report back on how you hit them.

9 holes with them tonight, played 2 balls. First iron shot of the night from 1 fairway 163 yds to a front pin. I pulled a 7i, expecting it to be short and roll up. Instead it was pin high and rolled 3-4ft past, so first iron shot and I have a GIR and look at bird. In case youre wondering, I missed the bird but hey I’ll take par.

Hole 5 par 3 - 9i that I expected to be front/middle actually ended up being middle/back. 3 jacked it for boge.

Hole 8 par 3 - I pulled 9i and put it back for the pw. I fatted the first short but the second one was as pure as I can get it and it hit on the back of the green and rolled off to the fringe.

Hole 9 par 5 - my fourth shot was 123 yds to the back of an elevated green, good ol sucker pin. I pull gw thinking it’ll go 115 at best for me and Im usually 100-110 with a gap. Was a nice high flight, hit the back of the green, took one bounce and rolled off the back and down the hill. Son of a……..

For cast irons they felt a lot better than I expected. I didnt find them harsh at all and I was really expecting a harsh feeling since I have a few forged sets. Im surprised though at the distance I was getting. I did build them 1/2” over steel based off the golfworks length chart since I used graphite shafts. We’ll see how they shake out the next few rounds. I got more than what I expected out of the first 9 holes with a $24.99 iron head.

Awesome! They really are superb irons. I wish they would get more love on here, but I understand why they can’t.
They are absolutely every bit as good as what the major OEMs are putting out, and can be had for much less cost.

Sounds like you need a new Maltby putter now.
;):ROFLMAO:

Just kidding. I couldn't help myself. Purely case of the pot calling the kettle black

Putting with the new LAB OZ.1 putter, I rolled one in for par on hole from about 15 feet….. go figure. The attempt on one was very poor haha.

If I was building a putter though, golfworks has a nice CS maltby putter head that I would go after. I feel like it would be a little on the light side but maybe not. Wish it had weights in it.

I'm an "S" mallet player with a 20-30 degree toe hang guy. I'm looking at the PTM-5 or PTM-5+. That being said I like the "Spider" like head of the Max Milled but not sure if I want to spend that on a putter.
My kids got me an Odyssey Eleven S for Fathers Day from Callaway Pre-Owned. - Like New condition $140

For those of you with the DRT A grind in play, have you had trouble with face manipulation? Just saw some review on YouTube and the guy had a terrible time opening the face a bit. It was so bad, it almost came across like an infomercial where they make some horrific attempt to do a simple task to justify the purchase of whatever gadget they are peddling.

Anyone else finding this an issue, or should I just chalk that up as a bad infomercial?

I think I saw the same review. I think the guy is exaggerating a bit but I've heard the A grind don't lend itself to much manipulation. Waiting for the S grind.
I had the TSW DRM and they were digging machines if you're a little steep. I've been gaming the Max Milled 54* .90 and the 58* 1.05. The 1.05 sole width don't lend itself to much manipulation either but I haven't needed to in the 20 plus rounds I have them in the bag.
I carry my TSW DRM 56* that you can open that face WIDE OPEN. for those RARE times I need to. I think I've had to do that once in the last 2 rounds.

I have heard similar concerns from other users as well.

The DRT-A does not have much (or any?) heel relief, so it's not easy to open way up on tight lies.
I have a 56°, and use it for almost every shot <100 yards. I'll open it up a little from the fairway, but have no issues laying it open from a fluffy lie, or in a bunker.
My previous wedge was a Fourteen RM-4 H grind, which was much more versatile from tricky lies.
But the DRT-A is a much better club from the sand, and the shape is much more appealing to my eye. I find it very similar to older Nike VR Pro and VR Forged wedges. For whatever reason, I make much more consistent contact with it than I did with the RM-4.

Just ordered a custom KE4 Max 7 iron that I will compare to my current 7. Ordered with a Nippon NS Pro Modus 3 Tour 120 shaft in S flex and Golf Pride MCC Plus 4 grip.

Will be interested to see if there is any feel or performance difference with a different shaft and head.

Please post up comparison photos next to the Hot Metals.

I bet you will like the KE4 Max. It should be extremely forgiving.

Yep, I'll try to post back when I have more.

I've played Maltby in the past. First set of irons I built myself were the original KE4, and I played KE4 SS1 irons for several years after that until I was fitted for the Mizuno irons.

To update, the shaft I ordered is backordered, so I might see if I can switch to the 1150GH Tour shaft.
