Would you join a club where you couldn't hit Driver at the range?

That would be a deal breaker for me. I am a range rat and depend on being able to practice everything.

I can’t hit anything longer than 5 iron at the range at my club (7 wood if the wind is into) and it really does suck. However, I’ve found that it prompts me to play more 9 hole rounds of golf instead of just hitting range balls for an hour so that I can hit tee shots. This change has ultimately led to me shooting better scores so I can’t complain too much.

But, there’s nothing worse than hitting driver for the first time all day on hole 1 during a tournament. It’s a crappy feeling

If the rule is absolute it is a dumb as some folks don’t hit driver far. That alone would make me question management, so maybe not.

You didn’t get the pictures of the houses I’ve destroyed at the end of the range.
Honestly they should just put up a Top Golf net and let us grip and rip!
Long balls just end up on the 8th hole. There's worse things. I'd rather them go to limited flight balls than not let people hit driver.

Hard pass for me. That's one of the few joys in life and would be tragic to not be able to do.

Probably not but it would depend on course and price. To me if the range isn’t big enough to hit driver you might as well set up one of those outdoor netted ranges with shot tracing I think it’s called golf pod or something like that and use that space for a really nice short game practice area

Our course has a 270yd range or so, we use limited flight balls. There is a forest at the end.....we're allowed to hit drivers but some guys can hit it off the range. I used to be able to.

We could clear it and make it a bit longer, but probably not worth it since we'd only have about 25 yards until you hit the 11th hole

Honestly?

Nope.

When I first joined my club three years ago, I couldn't hit anything over 200 yards. The range was down on the list of factors for joining the club - I wanted to play golf, not fight for tee times on the weekends, play less than 5 hour rounds and maybe meet new people.

They've sinced expanded it and we're able to use the full bag. I still barely use it, any practice time prior to a round I'll spend chipping and putting.

I personally wouldn’t. Gotta let the big dog eat!

it depends. whether the course is otherwise nice, and what the cost of the membership is. Its not an absolute NO.

What a great question. If the course is great yes. If it’s an ok course and I can find something better then no I wouldn’t become a member at that club

I don't love hitting driver on the range, but if I'm paying membership costs where I live I'd better be able to

I would not. Driver and getting off the tee is one of the most challenging parts of my game. If I can’t practice it, I’m not interested

I don’t join for the range. Could care less really.

A big thing with older clubs is the range being encroached upon by adjacent holes as redesigns lenghten the course to keep up with the modern game. That also puts some tees in proximity of adjacent greens/ fairways which sure wasnt part of the origonal desgn. 6200 may have been a good length in the 20's, but thats 1920's not 2020's.

there are expensive private courses in downstate NY where you can only hit limited flight balls even if you're hitting an 8 iron. We just don't have a lot of space here.

My club is limited to 240 yards, so I can't hit driver unless I get there before 9am. I can use limited flight balls any time.

Played on a course today that has a range where you aren't allowed to hit driver. Given the number of range balls we found out on the 14th fairway, I don't think everybody is paying attention to that signage.

Not hitting driver age range would be the least of my worries. A lot of places that offer memberships don’t have a range at all!

If had private club membership money, spending $10 at a range somewhere to hit driver isn’t going to put me on welfare.

I played a private club the other day where my driver would hit a house over the driver range. Couldn't hit more than hybrid. But that's not a big deal IMO
