Favorite US Winter Vacation Spot

Well I've only taken 3 vacations during winter time and they were a cruise to Haiti/Jamaica, Disney and Mission Inn for Bstone U. I can say all were great spots.

I will say the cruise was awkward since it was the week after the big earthquake in Haiti and when we stopped at our port (we were the cruise ship you saw on the news dropping off supplies) we were told no food would be served on the boat that day so we had to get off and spend money to help out the situation. I'm all about helping out but when you got off you were in the Epcot version of Haiti and the local workers were serving everyone a free all you can eat buffet....just felt wrong for so many reasons. We also weren't allowed out of the gated port area they owned. Sorry for the side rant but a cruise is always a good idea in the winter usually..

Cold - NYC during the holidays. Great food and plenty to do

Moderate- Austin or San Antonio

Warm - Costa Rica or Cabo

I am staying put for a warm weather winter break.

If I have to go somewhere warm, Hawaii or Rio (although I have never been to Rio, I hear it is great).

Cold weather - I like Aspen and Vail. Lots to do, good social scene, good food, good live music.

San Diego. Visiting my sons in Milwaukee does not count as a vacation in winter!

Lake Placid, NY.

Great skiing, can walk with no problem. Has the Olympic Village

Not in the U.S., but my favorite winter spot is Whistler, B.C. Great skiing, great food, great night life.

If it has to be in the U.S., then I would say either Steamboat, CO or Park City, UT

If warm,

La Quinta: great golf, good food, good crowd

St. John's: awesome snorkeling, great food, very scenic

Anguilla: terrific food, first class resorts and service, very chill

I also agree with Vegas, but I actually like Vegas in the fall the best during football season. It's too crowded during the winter.

I didn't know the US annexed Anguilla. :alien:

JB, for your criteria, I'd say Charleston, SC. Mainly because of the history and food factors, but it's also walkable if you stay downtown. Obviously, I'm biased as I used to live there, but the prices will be better than the high seasons (spring and fall) and the weather can be pretty good even in the winter. It won't be Florida weather, but still nice.

I'm also like MikeDean: I deal with the cold in the winter, I'm not going on vacation in the winter to another place that is cold.

Pensacola Beach, Florida. Fort Pickens is fun to visit.
As for food?

Peg Leg Pet's for lunch.
The Grand Marlin for Supper.
And Flounders Chowder and Ale house is a must too. Be sure to get the Key Lime pie!

North: Williamsburg, Va. That place is beautiful both in the theme park and the historical district. Especially during Christmas time. You can also usually still play golf there that time of year.

South: Orlando, FL. Hard to beat the weather and all the things to do there in the winter months with perfect weather also usually.

I would have to say Southern California. San Diego area or there abouts.

Orlando!

Hawaii...

If you're going for winter activities I'd go with Tahoe all day. If you're looking to escape winter, anywhere in Key West would do

1. It has to be a vacation destination
2. It has to have history
3. It has to have good food
4. It has to be walkable
Charleston. Probably going to add Savannah to that list thanks to the THP event.

Downton Charleston, SC. Ton's of great food and non-chain restaurants and everything is within walking distance.

1st choice: North Shore Oahu HI, it's warm, it's quiet and the hotel we stay at has 2 18 hole courses (Turtle Bay)
2nd
choice: Palm Springs CA, lots of courses, very warm, found a great cheap restaurant close to hotel (outside was deceiving)

I love going to Aruba each March as the snow melts up here. Great local seafood and if you like floating in the pool, hanging on the beach or gaming a bit at the casinos, it's perfect. They have US Customs preclearance in the airport there, so it is easier than most international travel in my experience.

For cold weather, I've only been skiing regionally so any of the Vermont mountains (Stowe, Killington, Okemo, Stratton etc). If you want to go way up north, Sugarloaf and Sunday River in Maine are awesome too. I prefer Sugarloaf.

A lot of my diehard skiing friends rave about Park City, UT, but I've never been.

Vegas or Florida for me. Give me stuff to do and plenty of golf

I didn't know the US annexed Anguilla. :alien:
.

You would think my reading comprehension would be above average, but it is not. Totally forgot about the US requirement. In that case, I hear Costa Rica is excellent.

Hawaii in the winter is the best time to do it if you have the time and $$$$.

I'm not a cold weather guy so it would be Vegas or San Diego. Actually think we might do Disney this February but still in the works.

We're going this November (so, technically fall, but still cold up here). It was actually the cheapest warm weather destination we were looking at. We got a ridiculous deal on the hotel and flight package.

Maui, Hawaii
Good food, good golf, good beaches, good fishing, good fun !
