The Carry Distance of the Clubs In Your Bag

My brother, a weekend golfer at best, completely MURDERS his shots. He's easily 2 clubs ahead on irons and drives, forget it. Problem is he definitely gets to see the whole course, he's everywhere. I understand where you are coming from, but unless the distance has some meaning and consistency it's more trouble than it's worth. His misses are further exaggerated because of the scale of his shots. A fade with his drive is just as bad as a slice for most people because the shot is in the air longer. He's the perfect example of a long hitter that has a high handicap.

What I've found to be most important in any part of the game is accuracy with every club, putter included. If I can't hit my area or target I'm just out there hoping for something good to happen.

I agree with this. I would rather be 20 yards short of my "average" but on the correct fairway than waaay ahead but somewhere deep down in a wrong fairway. For scoring, from what I see from my better buddies, are these - consistency, ability to reach and stay on the green from 200 yards and in, ability to stay out of trouble, and a wicked short game. These abilities will almost guarantee a good score. And oh, generally playing more than once a week because for sure the first three holes will be warm-ups.

You know this is an interesting subject. I think a good part of it has to do with "the arrow" as well as the archer. For example, when I played at The Home Course with SkiBum and Co., he saw me hit a 4 iron off the tee 217 yds. Now I've got carry distances on that club and they're about 195 - 200 yds. However, the loft on my 4 iron is only 20 degrees, whereas the loft on a Titleist AP2 4 iron is 24 degrees. I'm essentially hitting a 2 iron, not a 4 iron. Sure, they've done some fancy stuff to my Bio Cells by lowering the center of gravity, and supposedly made the face thinner, and added perimeter weighting and all that other tech to help me get that 2 iron shot up in the air. The thing is that the 4 iron shot goes like a low bullet. I'm lucky to have the club head speed to hit it at all.

Another club is the 7 iron. I was looking at the lofts on this one and comparing it to a 1984 set. Also let's not forget I'm playing a graphite shaft which is longer than the standard steel shaft, and also add 1" to the shaft length. The loft on this club in my set is the same as the 5 iron in the 1984 set, and the same as the 6 iron in the AP2. Basically due to the lower loft and length, I'm hitting a 5 iron, not a 7 iron. My 6 iron is the same loft as the 4 iron from 1984, and the same as a 5 iron in the AP2 set. So when you see my club carry distances and compare them to the chart "how far should you hit a ball", remember that the lofts on my set are a lot stronger than the sets used to make those charts - at least one club stronger.

If I was playing a set of AP2s, you could shift the 8 iron distance to the 7 iron and so on, however I'd probably be more accurate with my 7 iron.

I have been working on really nailing down my carry distances with my clubs and thought I would revive this one.

I have been working only hitting targets at the range and keeping track of where the ball lands. Knowing my carry distance has really helped making club selection a lot easier in my past few rounds.

I'm pretty close to you. My lob wedge is about 75 yards and my SW is 80-85 yards (I do hit both clubs full). Haven't figured out why my distances are so close there, both my off set wedges are pretty close regardless if whether it is a full swing, 9 o'clock or 7:30. I'm 100-105 with my gap wedge (49). Yesterday at the range I was hitting the hell out of my lofted clubs up to the 6I, getting about 10 yards more than you are listing but when I pull a club on the course I generally go pretty close to what you say, maybe even 5 yards shorter (yesterday I was clearing the net that was 142 yards to the center with my 8I. I used my range finder to scope the farthest target and it was 235 to the center of the net, and I was clearing that quite often with my driver. Hit my 3W off the turf pretty far as well, 210-215 it was hard to tell. My 3H is also 18 and I think I was in the 190-200 range with it. Where I practice the tee area is about 5-6 feet above the landing area, not sure how much distance that adds - 5 yards?

My carry ranges. Depending on what the shot requires I'll pick different clubs and swing profiles. Hit-and-stop (hard), a release/rollout/runup (medium/soft). That said, I've been working on quality of strike and distances have been going up as I am striking the ball better.

Handicap is 1. I play course under 6700 yards, for the most part The above are carry distances. Swing speed is under 100, down from 117 25 years ago. Yet, I still score,. Just differently. I think at this age , 62, I could beat myself at age 30. I try not to let getting consistently out-driven bother me.

These will vary slightly depending on how I am swinging it that day. Also very seldom do I hit anything below 6 iron full out. These numbers were gathered on trackman using ProV1x (my ball of choice).
