My brother, a weekend golfer at best, completely MURDERS his shots. He's easily 2 clubs ahead on irons and drives, forget it. Problem is he definitely gets to see the whole course, he's everywhere. I understand where you are coming from, but unless the distance has some meaning and consistency it's more trouble than it's worth. His misses are further exaggerated because of the scale of his shots. A fade with his drive is just as bad as a slice for most people because the shot is in the air longer. He's the perfect example of a long hitter that has a high handicap.
What I've found to be most important in any part of the game is accuracy with every club, putter included. If I can't hit my area or target I'm just out there hoping for something good to happen.
I agree with this. I would rather be 20 yards short of my "average" but on the correct fairway than waaay ahead but somewhere deep down in a wrong fairway. For scoring, from what I see from my better buddies, are these - consistency, ability to reach and stay on the green from 200 yards and in, ability to stay out of trouble, and a wicked short game. These abilities will almost guarantee a good score. And oh, generally playing more than once a week because for sure the first three holes will be warm-ups.
Carry distance on a flat course with no wind:
Driver 230
3w 200
5w 180
4h 160
5h 150
6i 140
7i 130
8i 120
9i 110
Pw 100
I don't hit full swing on my wedges
