In to THP for review are the new 716 AP2 irons from Titleist. In what has been a VERY talked about move, there is a LOT different about these irons from the previous iterations both physically and visually. Known as one of the upper tier players cavity designs on the market, the AP2's definitely have a very devout following so its been interesting to read the early feedback about the set, and to say its been mixed would not be an understatement.

THP was sent the 4i, 7i, and PW from the 716 AP2 set paired with the TT DG AMT shaft in stiff flex to spend time with.

Information From Titleist:

TITLEIST'S MOST ADVANCED PLAYERS' IRON MADE EVEN BETTER.

For golfers seeking a Tour-proven design with distance, forgiveness and feel.

Available Irons
3-W (RH/LH)

MSRP
Steel: $168/club | Graphite: $193/club

TOUR-PROVEN
Tour-proven distance comes from consistent speed. 716 AP2 irons use extreme high density tungsten weighting to position the center of gravity low and perfectly aligned at impact for more speed.

FEEL & FORGIVENESS
The most advanced, solid feeling and forgiving Tour played irons we’ve ever made. An innovative co-forged construction with high density tungsten low and on the perimeter increases moment of inertia for speed on off-center hits.

PLAYER BENEFITS
  • Speed from the high density tungsten, low CG design
  • Speed on off-center hits from the co-forged high density tungsten weights along the perimeter
  • Precise, Tour-proven trajectory through the set from the optimized CG progression
  • Fast through the turf with less dig from the slightly wider sole with trailing edge relief
  • Solid forged feel
  • True Temper Dynamic Gold AMT (Ascending Mass Technology) steel shaft promotes speed and launch in the long irons and control in the short irons, and features ascending weights from 112g in the 3 iron to 130g in the PW

Great pics james, very "clean" looking irons

Beautiful irons there, James. Looking forward to hearing how they perform.

Very classy looking irons. And in no shock, I really like the looks of the AP2s over the AP1s…

Nice pics James! And you get some AMTs on your hands :)

Very clean indeed. While I don't care for the polished finish of the sole I'm glad they went matte across the topline.

Minimal offset, looks like a fun set that some solid forgiveness mixed in.

I always love the look of the AP2 lineup. But they are a bit too much iron for my skills.

I think one of the points I'm interested in most is the sound compared to the 714 AP2's. I thought those were a bit clicky. Looking forward to your comparison.

I loved the 714 when I tried those. My only complaint about the looks on these is it feels like the marketing team had too much say in the looks. Remove the tungsten and forged stamps from the back of these and they would look much cleaner. Looking forward to your feedback on these.

I like it. Good clean looks and lines.

Yep, albeit a 4i, 7i, and PW.
Do you know if anyone has been able to confirm or deny the AMT's exclusivity to Titleist?

Not a clue unfortunately, from the looks of things (order options for other companies initially at release) it appears to be true, wouldn't be the first time they did that for a bit.

only 3 irons? weird. my buddy plays 714 ap2, and i really didn't like the look, feel, sound, or just about anything about them. but they were fitted to him, and he and i have very different needs. he is pretty lethal with them. i admit to really liking the pics you've posted, so maybe these are worth a look. curious to hear some comparisons to the 714 from you.

My favorite irons, gawd I love these

Gorgeous! I just got back from the golf shop where I demo'd the 7 iron. Super pretty iron and let's just say I had to put it down before I wound up making an impulse purchase that I definitely don't NEED right now!

Have fun with the review, can't wait to hear more!

These look really nice. Love the top line on them

Having demo'd the 7i and not seeing much difference in the amt shaft from the standard s300 will be interested in your thoughts and especially in the 4i

Most who try out a middle iron won't notice any difference really, the key to the set is in the high and low ends of the set in terms of that the weight changes allow flight wise where most golfers need it. Its cool because its SUCH a simple concept its surprising TT hasn't done it before.

BUY THEM!!!

The color looks quite a bit different between the ap1 and 2. Are they using better materials in the ap2?

Simply beautiful! Love everything about the AP2 except the price.

Those are some great looking irons. So sharp.

I absolutely LOVE mine! I can't wait to see what your thoughts are on performance. I have personally spent a lot of time hitting these against many others (including the 714 version) and these constisantly came out on top, for me! And yes, they look amazing.. Especially in hand!
