Any Poker Players Here?

I used to grind online and the local 1/2 games but life has gotten in the way.
But I can talk poker for hours. I love to play as much as I love golf.

I loved playing local pot limit or no limit games. These days though, I just don't have the time for it.

This thread seems dead so felt like reviving it. I'm 32 now and have been playing poker professionally since I was 19(although my first two years pro might be kind of a loose use of the term as I had a lot of ups and downs and really didn't make much $). I think poker and golf go great together because both are super fun to gamble on. And regardless of the stakes you're playing for winning $ at golf or poker are both equally satisfying and if it's your friends money that you are taking its even that much sweeter.

I'm probably just being a narcissist but if anyone has questions regarding bring a full time poker pro, the lifestyle the swings the ups and downs etc... I'd be happy to answer them. Fwiw I'm not just your avg local bar poker professional that probably doesn't actually even make any $. At one point I was ranked top 40 in the world in online poker tournaments and have amassed ~3 million in poker tourney cashes(note this is cashes not profit) and since online poker was shutdown in the US spring 2011 I am mostly a live high stakes cash game pro but will throw in maybe 6-10 world series of poker events every summer just to chase a bracelet.

Golf and Poker are certainly two of the best hobbies any man can have

In curious what games you play?
Local or traveling?

I love both but i can't play poker just for fun whereas Golf is more of a fun thing.

I play mostly 10/20 and 25/50 No Limit. Both games are uncapped buy in but my standard for both games is 300-400 big blinds so 6-8k for 10/20 and 15/20k for 25/50. I play most in Vegas because it's really the only place in America that runs games that big consistently. LA has decent sized games also but their casinos are ****. I spend about 6-7 months of my year in Vegas usually going for 3-5 weeks at a time. I personally love it because Vegas is sunny basically year round and the only time you really don't wanna golf is summer ironically and that's due to the 110-118 degree temps every F%%% day for like 10 weeks straight.

When you say you can't play poker just for fun is that strictly due to the monetary swings that are at stake? Or is it more due to the swings of losing frustrate/tilt you? If that's the case don't be ashamed as i don't know a single poker player a live that has as much fun losing as they do winning. It should however be something you enjoy doing and just understand that swings are part of the game. And regardless of how good or bad you are you are going to experience decent length streaks on both sides of it. Obviously the better you are the longer your upswings will be and the shorter your downswings will be, but they are gonna happen regardless. Just as an example my list trip I lost 120k in the first 10 days of the trip but still managed to leave the trip a small winner. Now I'm not saying dusting off 120k was exactly fun, but it's just part of the game and it's when you're losing you improve the most. When you're winning it just seems simple and like you're the best player alive. But When you're getting crushed session after session it makes you realize analyze your game and the potential leaks you may have and how you can go about fixing them. You always learn a lot more from losing than winning

I meant i have a hard time playing just for fun with nothing riding on it like in golf.

I Love Poker but it's work not play. I don't drink when I play poker.

If i didn't have a family I'd have given it a shot.

What's your favorite room in Vegas I'm guessing those limits aren't spread everywhere?

Ahhh that makes sense. My rule for that is simple, I don't play a hand of poker or a hole of golf with out at least some $ riding on it!

Bellagio is my fav spot by far but a lot of that is due to the fact that it's the only spot to for sure have a high stakes game running. The Wynn and Aria also run bigger games but they just kind of randomly pop up from time to time. If we are talking strictly comfort id say that the Wynn is the best due to the lay out, but i always have a soft spot for the B. Aria has a lot of low/mid limit games but the tables are stacked on top of each other and its a complete **** show

We play every night on our golf trip. The 2 kind of go together really well. Of course when I get home after 5 days and 4 nights of that nonsense my wife just looks at me and shakes her head at the shape I've put myself in. One of my buddies loves to gamble and isn't very good at poker so it is definitely worth my time and energy though. Also I used to be an actuary so probability is second nature to me. We play Hold Em and Omaha, I always call Omaha for my hand because there is more to keep track of and that favors me imo.

Yeah my gf always seems surprised when I wake up go play 18 holes and then go put in a 8-10 hour cash game session, but I love it.

By Omaha I'm guessing you play PLO(pot limit Omaha)? If most of your friends are relative poker newbs or just don't play a lot then your edge in PLO will definitely be higher than in NLH. Most of that just comes down to that fact that people that play poker randomly for recreation a few times a month/year will just MASSIVELY over value the strength of their hand in PLO. If they most play NL than they will have a very hard time adjusting to the fact that hands like 2 pair, the non nut flush, bottom set etc.. Are hands that you aren't always supposed to go broke with. But the good thing about PLO is that the equities in hands run so much closer than they do in NL, and you end up all in far more often that the shear amount of variance will allow even the most inexperienced PLO a decent chance to win on any given day. So for what you describe you're edge in the long run will likely be higher playing PLO, but you will also have a higher % of losing sessions overall as compared to NL

I am talking 10 guys where 5 or 6 are super drunk and just chipping in $20-$40 bucks. 2 or 3 are really playing poker. 2 are just wanting to gamble and 1 of those has a lot of money. I usually have a couple of nights where I break even and a couple of nights where I score big on any trip. I generally show up with $600 cash in my pocket and go home with $600 or $700 after golfing, eating, drinking, and gambling for 5 days. A few years I have come home with over $1000 which is nice. I am not great at poker, but I'm better than these dudes LOL!

You've literally just broken down how guys with all sorts of actual poker skill and knowledge are able to make a living at it. You don't have to be the best player around, you just gotta be better than most the people at your table.

As far as the probably too heavy poker theory/strategy tangent I went off on I just tend to do that sometimes and then after reading it realize I'm just rambling. I was basically just asking what form of Omaha you play, is it PLO/PLO8(Pot Limit Omaha 8or better meaning there is a low and high hand) or limit O8? I'd imagine for a few hours drunken poker game from some golf addicts you guys are just playing PLO but wasn't quite sure.

Either way tho, any day that starts with hitting the links and ends with check raising your buddies is an ideal day in my world

We play no limit Omaha at $.50/$1 ante. I would say I will pay $1 to see the flop in Omaha about 60% of the time. 30% of the time I feel like I have a chance to catch something and raise it or call to $2. Then there is a nice pot of $15 or so. From there it just depends on what shows up or how everyone bets.

Sounds like a great time with your buddies, and if you can make a few bucks off them all the better.

I like your strategy. If they are allowing you to limp into the pot for just $1(1 big blind) then it is definitely in your best interest to see a lot of flops. The whole key to that playing style is the ability to not get married to your mediumish strength hands especially when you are multi way going to the turn or river. Since you're dealt 4 cards you're obviously going to flop a lot more what seems like good hands than you ever would in no limit hold em. But conversely so will your opponents, so if you are going to be seeing the flop ~60% of the time you just got to be willing to have the discipline and awareness to know to fold your top 2 pair or say 9 high flush. And that ends the poker lesson for the day lol, I just love talking poker and golf so when I get the chance to do both i can't pass it up

I was playing 40+ hours a week when online was big (with a full time job). Now it's about once a month. I still love it though. Trying to shorten my sessions since my gf usually goes along and she can't play penny slots for 12 hours.

Yeah man Black Friday was absolutely awfuk. It took away my preferred way to play poker which was online, as well as locking up mid six figures of my $. Luckily i was able to be repaid almost in full, minus the the 75k i had in limbo between Ultimate Bet and QuickTender, but it still really sucks not to be able to play online poker in the US. When it happened I was 100% convinced it would be back within a year as I assumed that the amount of money the government could make by taxing the site and winning players would be way too huge to turn down, but unfortunately I was wrong

Once it is finally regulated they'll still find a way to screw it up. That's what Uncle Sam does.

I'm in Indiana and yet I'm still, on average, an hour away from 3 casinos. French Lick had a decent room but tried to go electronic, which didn't work, and now they're shut down. Tropicana in Evansville has decent action but they don't know how to run a room. Often they'll have 25+ on waiting list just because they're afraid to have too many dealers. Horseshoe is my fave and they're doing a major upgrade now. Room still good but action has slowed down.

Yeah I've actually heard horseshoe Indiana is actually a pretty nice card room. Do they ever run even moderately high stakes games?

Not for NL which is all I play. 2/5 only runs once in awhile. I think PLO has a decent size game once in awhile.

Games at 8:30 on a SAT...

Damn this is kinda weak. Being that it is relatively close to some decent sized cities you'd think they would have a big enough player pool to be able to sustain a regular $10/20 NL game or at the very least a $5/10

Wow that's pretty sad and kinda demoralizing. The DOJ shutting down online poker has also slowly decreased the amount of action in live cash games as well

started playing online again and waking my home game up from the dead. Playing on Americas Cardroom and im really liking it. Made a final table in the 1k last night too. Anyone playing there?

So the easiest way i found to deposit and withdraw is CashApp for bitcoin deposit and PayPal withdraw. Real easy after the initial set up and the tournaments are real nice

I wouldn't recommend ACR but I used to play there. I use Bovada/Ignition when I feel the desire to play online.

I really miss the old days of Party/Stars when the game was rocking.
