Do the Pro's play the same ball we do?

Phil plays a Callaway Chrome Soft x, and others play the Pro V1 & Pro V1x on tour. Are they the same as what we buy in a Pro Shop or the various golf stores? In the late 60's I caddie for Rod Funseth in the 68 Hawaiian Open. He had 6 dozen Titleist 90 compression balata balls in his locker Tuesday morning prior to the practice round for the Tournament. He told me his balls had tighter quality and were between 88 - 92 compression. He said the commercial line of Titleist 90 compression that I buy were not as tight compression wise. Now that solid ball are what we play, does the various manufacturers provide better quality balls for the Pro's than we buy/play?

Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. Depends on the player and the company

That doesn't mean they're playing "better" balls. They're playing the same balls, just maybe handpicked for tolerances. It'd be the same as when I order a driver head from Hireko, Wishon, or Matlby. Their specs might be 10° loft +/- 1° and square face angle +/- .5°. I can (maybe) call them and pay for handpicking service to find a head that is as close to 10° loft with the condition that the face is not closed at all. It'd still be the same head, I'd just be paying for their time to handpick it to tighter tolerances.

It could just be an unreleased version or prototype.

Or the same design philosophy, but tweaked slightly for the pros, compression or otherwise

As others have mentioned, this is not always the case. When there was only the standard chrome soft on the market, the majority of Callaway players were using a ball closer to (if not the same) as the current chrome soft x.

I am pretty certain none of them play the ball I play.

Think of it like any large manufacturing company. To mass produce, you deal in tolerances. If tolerances to the general public were the same as the guys on tour the cost would triple or there wouldn’t be as many options

I agree. The tour pro's are getting the very best balls produced. Most are special runs with a specific number etc.

I would even guess that they’re not even special runs necessarily. That would take too much time too. It’s probably part of the quality check system they have.

I thought they played a prototype version of the balls marketed. I remember reading something once making mention of it.
