Rory McIlroy says alcohol sales should be limited at tour events

I think its a HUGE problem as the outcome of a shot/score has been changed, thus the preservation of the game for players to preform has been diminished. PGA (plenty golf n alcohol)

I find a general lack of Decorum in all things these days.

Society is definitely going in the wrong direction.

I agree. I mentioned in another thread that beers were available for sale 8am at the Honda. They need to limit the hours and cut it off similar to stadium pro events.

Disagree with Rory on this subject. Unruly fans suck for everyone at the event, including players, and they should be removed whenever conduct warrants expulsion.

The focus should be on behavior. Drink count was mentioned several times. 4 craft beers vs 4 Miller Lites creates a different result. 4 vodka tonics vs 4 Miller Lites creates a different result. 4 drinks in a 250 pound person vs a 100 pound person creates a different result.

I went to the Ryder Cup and this is the Super Bowl for unruly golf "fans". Thankfully, the staff quickly booted the a-holes. The organizers posted messages on the scoreboard about poor behavior. They also charged about $10 for a beer. Big crowds are good for golf and host sites. The occasional football, turned golf, fan may need a little coaching on what is/isn't accepted. It seems too convenient to say alcohol is the problem. There's always going to X% of a-holes in every crowd. I simply prefer culling the herd with an action-based criteria.

Peace.

I cannot disagree more. My local lpga tour event has $50 all you can drink tickets. It's a blast!!

I really am surprised how many think limiting alcohol is the best solution. Throwing out the bad actors, whether drunk or sober, seems like the best solution, and doesn't restrict the ability of the tournaments to sell hospitality with unlimited drink packages.

As mentioned by Tkapp, the Masters serves plenty of alcohol and has very little issues, because they immediately shut down any buffoonery. The tournaments and pga are letting the attendees get away with murder.

I'm not much of a drinker these days, but in my experience those who want to overindulge and make asses of themselves can usually find a way. Why punish those who can handle the booze responsibly? Just my 2.

Selling booze starting at 0800 is not good IMHO. Drunkards are the reason I stopped going to NFL games, they made the game day experience awful.

I’m sure alcohol has a part to play in the idiocy but the fools who scream out at these events probably Pre-planned their stupidity to have 3 seconds of fame so they can relive it on TiVo. I highly doubt the alcohol sponsors at the hospitality tents would approve of this no mixed drinks idea.

I ran into two such guys on Friday. They were over served and acting a fool. They made comments about two women and were quickly told to shut it down. Didn’t hear a peep out of them the rest of time we stood there.

My point is that there are knowledgeable fans that will squash any shenanigans. I think if Rory were playing better, he might not notice. I surprised he is as low as he is with his poor ball striking.

Ehh, I'd say he is playing alright....

It's tough man, do we give him the benefit of the doubt and accept that he's just sharing his honest opinion? One we all know should be discussed? In my opinion, fans should not be enforcing a code of conduct with other fans - Lots of people said limiting the drinking isn't the solution but better enforcement of the rules is -- And the more I read that the more I support it.

It can't be that hard to identify the people who are out of line and boot them can it?
I feel like golf has encouraged this slide from a gentlemen's game towards a Stadium Sport but is now realizing it needs to be leashed.

Just like with all things, why limit the rights of the few when a handful of people cant control themselves? I say instead, if someone is being unruly, simply escort them off the property. The problem isnt alchohol, the problem is people are jerks.

^^^^^this.

How about just police the fans that cause problems? Yell something inappropriate? You're out. Be an ass to other fan? You're oit. Thatseems mich easier to enforce than a drink limit to me.

Good plan Austin

And compared to other events, the beer at the Masters is practically free. Absolutely no issues there with any buffoonery.

I couldn't agree more. I've been to 3 Masters and have seen plenty of guys with their collection of 8-10 plastic beer cups from the day. One year I drank 6 or 7 beers watching a practice round. They have zero issues with behavior because they eject anyone who is acting like a fool, sober or not.

As much as I love golf and watching the PGA Tour, some fans absolutely ruin it. Wish the fans were more like the Euro Tour to be honest. I wouldn't say booze is the problem, its just people acting foolish and we don't need that in the sport. I cringe when I'm watching and hear bababooey or mashed potatoes after every shot.

He's not wrong.

Here's a controversial take, make tour stops dry. I bet the tomfoolery goes way down.

The Masters doesn't have general admission either. The Masters can afford to throw people out. That's not a terribly fair comparison.

Interesting enough, but the Masters doesn't seem to have this problem and they sell beer at a pretty cheap price too.

EDIT: just saw the few posts before me concerning the Masters. Agree.

But is The Masters a normal tour stop?

Hahahahaha

You did learn about prohibition in school right? There are way to many easy ways to sneak booze in somewhere and trying to screen 30,000 people just isn’t feasible.

Booting obnoxious people is the best answer. It works at concerts and everywhere else. If you can’t behave you get the boot and your name is flagged. Come back in and you go out with the police for trespassing.

Yes, but so will attendance and the money the tournament makes. Watch other prices go up as well. All sporting events have issues with idiots drinking, it should be up to the facility/event to handle or remove those being a distraction. There are too many people that can drink responsibility while enjoying an event. Unfortunately there are the few that can ruin it.

Comparing this to Prohibition is silly and kind of missing the point. Of course, you have to boot problems. But you can only boot people after they have been a problem. Best way to nip that in the bud, be selective with who gets into a PGA Tour gallery, keep the alcohol out of peoples' hands.

Yup, people are asssholes. Way of the world. Doesn't sound fair that a few people ruin it for everybody, but life isn't fair. While making a tournament dry isn't really possible, limiting consumption is doable. Wouldn't be hard.
