I gather you're mostly venting here---understandably so.
Your question regarding lessons and range time is spot on imo.
I've only been playing about 14 months or so myself.
Seriously considered quitting a few months ago.
I took a number of lessons from a local pro but hit an early plateau and didn't improve for several months. Actually got worse--and the baseline was very poor to begin with.
I assumed my lack of progress was just lack of aptitude. I was very wrong about this.
My problem was that the first pro and I were simply not a good fit.
Switched pros and started weekly lessons.
Handicap dropped from 32.0 to current trend of 25.1 inside of nine weeks.
I strongly recommend finding an instructor and taking frequent lessons.
Your scores should reflect progress over a couple of months or so.
If they don't--maybe trying out a different coach is worth a shot.
I'm not exactly a gifted athlete and am very doubtful I'll ever be good at this game. That being said I think I can at least get to an 18 cap or so---and had I stayed the course with coach #1--I'd be fishing on the weekends instead of golfng.
