I used to be a 1-2 time a year player who always shot around 98-100. Since I played so little I was fine with the 15 year old clubs. Over the last 6 months though I’ve found myself playing nearly every week, hitting balls on the weekend when not playing a round. I’ve gone from averaging 100 to 85-89. (Shot and 86 Sunday!!). Anyway, I think I’m ready for a new set of clubs so I went to the local shop and tried the g700 and the i500. The g700 seemed to fit me better though I didn’t really like how chunky the looked. I was landing the 7iron around 164 and my misses weren’t all that bad. I tried the i500 and I struggled a bit getting distance, 7 iron was carrying 140osh on average but on my best shot went about equal to the g700. I500 felt “thin” coming off the face but it was enjoyable when hitting correctly.

So, finally on the my question...I don’t want to spend $1200 on a set of irons that I might grow out of and want more control and spin (g700) or a set that I may never get good enough to use effectively (i500). Does anyone have any suggestions on purchasing clubs that can help you improve but also be good for when your game is more consistent.

Also, has anyone hit the power spec i500 and can give a review?
Have you tried the g410 irons? They are a great looking iron and hit well for me in testing. The Mizuno 919 Hot Metal irons played better for me but the g410 were a close 2nd. They won’t look as chunky as the g700 and are priced really well.

Continue to be very happy with these irons. They have become one of the strongest parts of my game. Easy to hit. Incredibly forgiving on mishits with very little distance loss. They have a higher ball flight than my previous irons but distances are right about the same. The higher flight has helped hold greens which is a nice bonus. Playing a couple weeks ago on really fast greens there were times where my higher trajectory helped me hold the green when others rolled out much further or even off the back. Really enjoying these and Iím looking forward to playing them this year.

So happy to finally get some time with these on the course. It was hard to get through winter knowing I had these brand new clubs just waiting for me. The more time I get with them, the happier I am to have them. The forgiveness is what really impresses me the most. As a 15 cap, I don't always hit the center of the face, but unless I just totally make a horrid swing, the ball still gets fairly close to where I was aiming. My "greens hit" number so far this spring has drastically improved. It just gives me confidence to step on a tee or in to an approach shot knowing I can just make a good swing and not a perfect swing and the result will be good.
