I had to visit a Dicks store this afternoon. I was shocked by the club selection. Yeah they had TM and Callaways latest but they also had some really old iron sets that were still at full retail. The golf specialist wasn’t to be found. I imagine they sell lots of balls and maybe bags and apparel but it really spoke to me about how different the golf customer is. I can’t believe they will sell golf for ever.

Depends on the store, some have amazing customer service in their golf section, others not so much. I agree they do have some older model irons still on display for sale. My local DSG had a pretty good golf section.

Balls, accessories and possibly putters are all I consider from them, equipment wise. The club selection is minimal, as mentioned, and the golf specialist never seems to be there when I am in the store.

While I’m not a huge fan of what they do in gold currently, they are still the biggest seller of clubs out there overall. I’m guessing geography plays some role.

I think when it comes to the golf department, they just carry the basics and older supplies they still have. Golf Galaxy which is owned by Dicks has a much better selection and customer service for a golfer’s needs. As soon as Dicks gets a decent golf employee, they seemed to send him to Golf Galaxy.

With Golfsmith dead, Golf Galaxy offering limited locations, I'm sure Dick's get a lot of business by default. For instance, in Chicago, they are the only brick and mortar golf retailer other than Club Champion or other high-end specialty. I suppose Target and Wal-Mart sell some balls and stuff too. But if you just wanted to demo a club without a fee in Chicago proper, I think they are literally the only game in town.

When Dick’s company announces sales numbers for golf, I wonder if Golf Galaxy numbers are included. If yes, then it’s artificially inflated.

Isn't there a number of PGASS in Chicagoland? Schaumberg or somewhere?

The product lines that each DICK’S carries are based on a Tier system decided by previous year’s golf sales.

The store I work at every so often, carries Callaway, TM, Ping, and Tommy Armour full line + Cleveland Wedges. Another store 20 mins away, carries all of those plus Full line Titleist, Cobra, Srixon, etc.

As tough as retail is you can’t debate that stat. It just screams for a better way to buy golf equipment.

There is a PGASS in Schaumburg and a Golf Galaxy in Vernon Hills (which is also getting a PGASS), it might not be close enough to him to be worth a trip.

Having visited a number of them around the country, I've found that it varies quite a bit from store to store. I'm sure a number of factors go into it:

Available floor space
Sales vs other DSG stores
Same store sales relative to other activities (hunting, fishing, etc)
Proximity to other golf stores (whether DSG-owned Golf Galaxy or someone else)

For a general purpose sporting goods store, Dick's varies from "pretty much what I'd expect" to "more than I expected".

I go to dicks for balls and accessories but that's about it. Very limited selection of clubs and the help is definitely not interested in helping people.

I love Dick's for their cheap golf clubs. Who needs a Vokey when you can get a Top Flite wedge that works just as well for $30?

We have:

Roger Dunn - best
PGASS - next
GG - okay
Dick’s - meh

All in our area. So I understand why Dick’s doesn’t go all out with their golf section.
