    Question about delofting irons

I just switched from Steelhead irons to Apex cf-16's, and I'm very happy with my new clubs, but have one problem. When I bought the Steelheads, I bought the matching 3 & 4 hybrids. They are long, and go straight. But when matched with the Apex 5-GW, I now have too big a gap between my 4H and 5i. I could choke down on the 4H I guess, but don't trust this consistency wise. After playing 4 rounds, I brought the irons to a very good local fitter as the irons were stock black dot from CPO. Turns out they need to be flattened a bit. I mentioned the issue with the 4H and 5i, and he had me hit both. He suggested delofting each club 2*. We tried it with the 5, and I picked up 1/2 club (6-7 yds) which narrowed my gap nicely. I told him to go ahead and deloft the rest of the set. Now that I'm home and had time to think about it, I'm worried about maybe losing too much of the bounce on them by delofting each club 2* and it will affect their playability....Anybody out there know more about this then me?

Sorry, I don't, but if you play them and it seems to be an issue you could always have them bent back. I know that leaves you right where you were at before with the loft gap, but just pointing out that it's not the end of the world.

What's the yardage game between 4h & 5i before the bend?

I’ve done 2* and know a good golfer who has done the same on a set and saw no issues with bounce or turf interaction.

Thanks, that's good to hear. The fitter told me "2* is the sweet zone" with this. Gives you an extra 1/2 club, and shouldn't affect playability, like you said. But I over think these things. If it was a set of SGI's like a PING G Max, I wouldn't worry about it. But with a set like the Apex, I assume they have less bounce to begin with.

I think you'll be fine like emart said. That being said, I probably would have played them as is first. Depending on where that gap was, it might not have even been an issue. There's a huge difference between a gap from 160-180 and a gap from 200-220 or even 190-210 in my book.

Yeah, I get that, but I'm a far cry from some of the long hitters here. At 64, my 5 iron IS my 165 club. LOL. Old age and sea level, no fun. So in a perfect world, I come out of this 172ish 5i, 185+ 4H, 200 3H, then 3W, Driver

I can't see the bounce you lose from a 2* loft bend to be very noticeable. I've bent a lot of irons weaker (opposite of you) and never noticed an adverse effect by adding bounce.

I've done it with several types if irons, a couple similar to the apex and with a set of blades.

Long time ago, I bought a new partial set of Mizuno MP-52 irons on ebay, 7-PW.

My plan was to insert my more forgiving MX-200 5 & 6 irons for a tidy mixed set. Only, I didn't account for the MX's stronger lofts.

Because my MX set was the known commodity and I was hesitant to change them, I opted to strengthen the lofts of my new MP-52's by 2.

Happily played them for years without any issue at all. Everyone's different of course but there's a very good chance that you'll be just fine.

If it was me, I would have done the 2 on the 5i and 1 on the 6i and keep the rest of the set as they were. How often are you really hitting your 5 iron as opposed to the rest of the set. Callaway did a lot of work to get the bounce right on the entire set. You can get used to anything with equipment with some practice but I personally would have made the changes to the top two irons only.

So I picked up the irons an hour ago. Turns out that in the set I got the lofts were off (some up to 2* weak) in all but the 7 and 9 iron. Had the lies flattened 2*, and he tweaked the lofts to the specs which gave me the best gapping to fit between my 4H and 54*SW. I'm thankful for a site like this. Before joining here, I'd have been ignorant about loft, lie adjustments, and just thought the clubs weren't right for me, or my swing was off(and that never happens! LOL)
