Adventures in Golf visited Portland a few years back where they documented a variation of Urban Golf that they play down abandoned streets. Just wondering what others have done to swing the stick in a place other than an official course? We used to play a version of urban golf with foam balls, but played that concrete was lateral hazard because we were poor college kids who didn't want to buy a second trash set of clubs.

Now we play a chip around game on a few lots around my house (2.5 acre lots) where we play to people's utility boxes, easy way to smack some balls around with some beers before the sun goes down.

Am I in the minority or do others toy around with some variety too?

I don't do it. Tough to find abandoned areas around here. That said, it sounds like a hoot. I would definitely be into it.

I've never done it, but it sounds interesting. You could take a small mat with you for the concrete/asphalt lies (I believe that the Old Course does that in the winters so you'd still be playing in the proper golf tradition).
