Okay, I got an answer to my question thanks to the new thread started by Canadan!
In my scenario I should have taken my ball under a two-stroke penalty and found the nearest point of relief in the Fairway. This would have meant I would have circled around the green 180 degrees or so to find a spot in the Fairway no closer to the hole.
This scenario was addressed in one of the videos that I watched.
