Strengthening loft: how much is too much?

When I upgraded from the X2 Hots to the Apex CF16's, I ordered them 1 degree strong to match the lofts of the X2 Hots to the new Apex's. This helped to seamlessly transition the gapping from one iron set to the new one...

I haven't seen any issues with having lofts bent from 2 - 4 degrees strong, but then I have weird swing, and have never been accused of being a digger.
