I also think Daly's polarizing personality and inability to compete at this stage of his career muddy the conversation. What if the situation was different. What if Tiger had the failing knee but could still perform at a high level and potentially win but only if he had a cart to limit the walking? Does that change the conversation for anyone?

To be fair you pretty much use the same energy pushing or carrying, one is easier on the joints though. I think I read the calorie difference was like 20 for a round.

Unless they are carrying their own bags it makes no difference whether they walk or ride.

Walking 18 is not a strenuous activity so I don't really see an advantage to riding.

We are talking about "Athletes" right?
Golf is a game not a sport! When they carry their own Bags I'll call em athletes.

I thought the Casey Martin and how the PGA handled it was disgraceful especially now when they give special accommodations to anyone.

I wish they were all riding. Anything that might speed them up. Maybe we can get rid of the caddies so we dont have to get the blah blah blah that TV seems to think everyone wants to hear.

Its a game. Its a skill. Not a sport. We watch to see them hit shots. Shots that seem not possible to most(200 yard 7 irons etc). Not to watch them walk.

But the real reason is he is in his 50's, fat, out of shape and a past champion who is used to taking a cart on the Champions tour. He probably knows he won't contend so why make things worse than they are.

If the PGA allows a cart, so be it. I just want to find out who is giving Daly advice on his knee: JD is quoted as saying that his doctor told him he was “too young for a knee replacement.” Really? Daly is the same age (53) I was when I had both of my knees replaced! Like him, I was really overweight, and had osteoarthritis in my right knee. If there is another medical factor involved, okay...otherwise, he needs to get it fixed! JD claims that he would much rather walk - TKR will help him do that!

I don't see it as cheating. He has been allowed to do it.

I do see it as an unfair advantage not provided to his competitors. As others have mentioned, if you can no longer play the game at the level of the competition without special compensation, then it's time to move on. He's no more "entitled" to earn a living playing golf than anyone else is at a job they can no longer perform.

I'm just curious why people think a rider gains a competitive advantage?
I mean we're talking about finely tuned athletes right? Pfft.
John Daly was a drunk who chain smoked in his heyday, let's not confuse Golfers with Athletes.

Some would argue that riding hurts more than helps.

It exerts more energy in the heat to walk than ride. It gives shade in the sun. It is less taxing on the body overall.

If it offered no advantage to the body, it wouldn’t be necessary by anybody regardless of condition.

I haven't read all the responses here, but I wouldn't necessarily call a cart on tour cheating. I view it more as an advantage if anything. I mean, someone walking a course will naturally get tired right, where as the person riding is able to reserve energy for their shots. Clear advantage in my opinion...
