I read the article above and it got me thinking. What needs to happen to reign in the issue, whether perceived or otherwise, of rowdy crowds at the Ryder Cup? Do you feel there is a problem at all?

My thoughts are this. Institute a zero tolerance policy. If there is something perceived to be over the top offensive, eject the fan no questions asked. I was at the 2016 Ryder Cup, and while I didn't hear anything offensive personally, there are many reports of it. If I would have heard it and security was looking for the party who did so, I would have no issue pointing them out should I have known who it was. I feel like most fans are respectful and a few bad apples tend to get the attention.

I feel that if they demand the same level of respect for the players that some tournaments do, they can create a better overall climate for the players. I can't envision a situation at Augusta National where someone would get away with yelling something vulgar about a player, their spouse, or just being blatantly disrespectful. Don't get me wrong, I love some fan involvement. But, there are times where it has obviously gone over the top.

Intensity by all is great; vulgar directed at players's families or shouts intended to mess with a player during his swing are way over the line. Honestly, after the fans at Shinnecock last year and Bethpage this year, my first thought too was: "Great, us Americans will look awful at the 2024 Ryder cup."

Is it wrong that I wish the US players had the same amount of intensity and unity that the fans have?

That is something I am worried about. I just don't understand the attitude some people have. The same guy that yells "mashed potatoes" or any other stupid remark after a tee shot.

Limit alcohol sales, boot offenders. Get it locked down and show a no tolerance policy to that kind of behavior, and then you can tackle it early before it gets to be too much.

I tend to agree with the zero tolerance approach, and really get annoyed at the attention seekers that want to yell in the player's backswings.

I think there are a few people who will create a problem. As an American golf fan, I'm terrified of those few Ryder Cup fans.
I just wish people could stick with rooting for a player/team/side. That gets you involved. Rooting against anyone is negative.

I'm trying to think what fan experience was criticized more, Hazeltine Ryder Cup or Liberty National Presidents Cup. My point is, it's not as much about the location as it is the event. Ryder Cup has become a much more intense event in the last decade. It is such a different atmosphere than any other real tour event or even a major. There will be knuckleheads everywhere you put this event, hell I saw it first hand at Valhalla. I for one believe the atmosphere at Bethpage in 2024 will be so damn electric, that it could turn out to be one of the best RC's in this century.

Probably the Ryder Cup. The Presidents Cup was such a beatdown, I feel the trash talking was more to just make it interesting and maybe piss off the Internationals enough to get them to actually show up on Sunday.

oh it was definitely the RC, which was part of my point. It's not about the location, it's about the event IMO. I feel like Azinger has played a role in this transformation. When he was captain in 08, he was asking for fans to be heard, hosted pep rally's, and seemingly every time he could asked for the fans to be the 13th man. Just so happens that team, which was such a big underdog, went on to win for the first time since 99. Part of me really thinks that is where the more boisterous fanbase has come from.

That, and the fact TV channels keep letting these clowns get heard on broadcasts so now everyone just screams stuff so they can hear themselves later. It's freakin embarrassing.

It could be a point of the media taking a story and running with it in turn making it a bigger issue than it was. As I said, I didn't hear any really out of hand stuff at Hazeltine directed at any players. After I typed my first post, I remembered one situation where there was a group of guys being pretty disrespectful. It wasn't to a player but to a fan that was in the crowd. Nothing vulgar, just being disrespectful. She took it in stride, but you could tell she was uncomfortable. After a short time once the surrounding fans realized they weren't going to let up, they were told (not asked) to shut it and leave her alone. Oh boy, they sure thought they were funny though.

Let's make one point clear, some of the European fans behaviour has been appalling as well. Even back in the Belfry days in the last century, cheering USA players driving into the water on 18th is poor ,unacceptable behaviour. Golf is better than that. All fans need to respect the opponent , applaud good shots from both sides.

My problem is the number of non golfers that go because it is an event to be seen and heard at. Off the wall idea, but I would only sell tickets to people with a handicap , and if they misbehave, make them understand there would be consequences...……..ask their club to ban them for a month.

What makes 2024 even more interesting will be the choice of captains. USA will be mad not to choose Phil , who is loved in New York, so Europe will choose...………...Poulter, who is not ………...

Should be fun.

I like this! Not going to happen though I'd guess. Too much money to be made from the over priced alcohol sales.

Its going to be bad and we all know it... A lot of money is made on these events and hard to stop taking money...

I think with the amount of lead time and the nature of ticket sales for the event will help since it will be by lottery, you'll get fewer locals. Yes, I'm hanging some of last weekend's rowdiness on New Yorkers. Not all, but some. In addition, I think it's an easy bandwagon to jump on, that American fans are rowdy jerks with no respect. That sort of behavior is not limited by oceans.

In general, though, I do think there will be a greater sense that misbehavior will be punished if only because of how much of a spotlight is being shone on it.

We we're at the 2016 Ryder cup and while we were all having a good time I don't recall anything super over the top. It's banter....the reports I remember reading seem to isolate a few things and make it worse on everyone.

Of course the euro guys harped on it, but we do it too when we play over there a little. Maybe the Americans are slightly worse but I didn't see anything that was as bad as I recall reading about.

I do below a zero tolerance policy needs to be put into play for those visibly drunk. Not sure how to reduce sales, punch cards for drinkers? Have no idea.

I think it’s going to be embarrassing.

I feel like they get a pass because it’s NYC and “haha, that’s just how they are! Super fans, what can you do lol!”

Anywhere else on the planet that would be absolutely unacceptable (speaking of the PGA crowd behavior). How do you think it would have been viewed if the crowds behaved like that last year at St Louis?

They shouldn’t get a pass. The American golf fan is better than that, but all we will be known for is the behavior of a few drunken NYC sports fans who cross the line and keep going.

It should feel like a home game for the US. I don’t think anyone has a problem with that, but I just feel like it’s going to be way overboard and firmly into embarrassing territory.

It's going to be bad and embarrassing. No getting around it the people that cause these issues are the worst types of fans in the world. It makes me not want to even watch the event because I know something stupid is going to happen and it will just make me mad and angry. I really can't stand people like that.

Simple lesson: Root for the players/team you like and never root for somebody to fail. That's when it can get out of control.

Spoken like a true New York homer

I agree that it is more about the event than the venue. I only posted the article as it is what got me thinking about it. I think regardless of where it is held, the narrative that the US fans are out of line and disrespectful will be told by the media. They will turn it into a story to suit their needs. But, I would love to see some strict policies in place to curb those few a**holes from feeding the media's story. I hate to see anything take away from the competition.

problem is what is offensive? It's a purely subjective matter. Obv if someone screams the N word,it's obvious but
What happens if someone makes fun of a guys wife or child or sibling to rattle them? I don't see too many scenarios
where zero tolerance policy works. Also, the yelling and rattling of the visiting team is a huge part of the Ryder Cup

Give marshals the power to make the call. What happens if someone makes fun of a wife, child, or sibling? In my eyes, if fans are hurling personal insults about a player or their family, they have no place at the event. At that point, escort them out.

I was at the 2016 Ryder cup and it's just a small percentage of the fans that are out of line. Less than 5% in my estimation. The Ryder Cup has gotten rowdier in the last 20 years and overall I think it's good for the event. There will always be idiots whether it's on the highway, at a concert, or at a sporting event. At least in golf we don't have the hooliganism and resulting injuries/deaths that you see at soccer matches all over the world.

Let's be real. Only way to stop it is to not serve alcohol.other than that and being a nazi for yelling anything it will continue
