    Foursomes ... Thoughts?

Played a foursomes (Alternate shot, single ball) on Sunday, was heaps of fun but damn hard to find any rhythm.

As a pro it would be okay I guess, but as an amateur it's damn hard. I was the low handicap, do I felt extra pressure.

Have to say I'm not a fan overall, but as something different ...

I've never played alt shot. if everyone is around the same level I could see it being fun. If the skill levels are vastly different I am not sure it would be as fun though, but again I've never played so maybe it would be better than I am imagining.

I would hate if my shots left someone better with really crappy/tough shots to try and save us.. I have a best ball event coming up, that's fun too but then people bicker on whose shot to use

It is a fun game, but not as a foursome. 2 man alt shot is great.

    ???

Foursomes consists of two, 2-man alternate shot partnership playing a match.

I'm guessing that's what he's talking about - alt shot match play is often referred to as "foursomes" vs. "four ball" for best ball.

I love the format, but I think if you're playing with someone you're not used to playing with, Pinehurst is a more forgiving format and isn't quite as much a grind.

Im scheduled to play a Ryder Cup format in September, with four-ball, foursomes, and singles matches. Have to admit the foursomes has me most concerned as thinking itll be difficult getting into a Rhythm.
Really looking forward to it as a fun competition. My poor partner.

    First rule of Foursomes.

Never apologize. You're going to put your partner in some bad, bad spots. He'll do the same to you. But hey, you're not doing it on purpose!

I remember one time I hit one of the Top 10 shots in my life. My big-hitting partner had gotten us within 180 yards on a Par 5. The hole was tucked in the back left corner of the green with a huge bunker guarding it. I hit a gorgeous high, lefty fade that landed in the middle of the green and rolled out to about two feet directly behind the hole. Haven't hit a 4-iron before or since that was even close to that good.

Partner missed the putt. Never touched the hole and ran it four feet past. I made the comeback putt and all he said was, "Nice birdie". Like I said, never apologize, he didn't yip that putt on purpose. And hey, if I'm playing my own ball I'd have had 280 for that second shot and laid up instead of having 180. You just do what you can and it all works out.

Alt shot is always a little weird if youre not used to it. I think too many over think it instead of just playing and not trying to set up the next shot for your partner.

A particularly fun version is mixed foursomes. I've done that twice, once with a short-hitting older lady of about my handicap. It was a club event for "couples" but apparently she and her husband had long ago discovered that mixed foursomes and a happy marriage were not compatible. So she asked the pro to pair her up with someone whose wife didn't play. It was a fun day and we did pretty well although we didn't win anything.

The other time was with a serious player who was quite remarkable and pulling off amazing shots no matter where I had put the ball for her.

It helped that we were playing her home course. The only legitimate contribution I made was holing out a long putt from the fringe for birdie on a Par 3. When we got to the green, she pointed to a spot miles from where I'd have been aiming and said, "Aim here and try to hit it five feet past the hole". Even though I couldn't for the life of me see the break she was talking about I did and sure enough it swooped around then hit the brakes right before the hole and barely died into the top side.

Never played it. Then again, I think I've only played in a group of four people once.

I haven't played a full round of alternate shot but I have played a 6 holes of it. It is definitely difficult to find any sort of rhythm. It was fun though and nice to do once in a while but I wouldn't want to do it all the time.
