My Bro Conundrum - Who do you be a Bro to?

I'm hoping to get some opinions on a situation that my buddy and I were discussing after witnessing the following:

His neighbour is a couple in their early-50's with a teenage daughter. My buddy has never interacted with the Mrs. of the household only the Mr. and it has been cordial. We are in our mid-30's. It was late at night and we were at the side of his house having a smoke. We then see a teenage male come out of the back entrance of the house, quietly sneak around to the side that we're standing on and then leave the premises without saying a word to us. The question is who should we be a bro to?

I was leaning towards being a bro to the neighbour and my reasoning was that we are closer in age to the dad than the teen. There's approximately a 19 year difference between us and the teen and a 15 year difference between us and the dad. He was on the side of the teen because everyone deserves to get some...lol. Could be that I'm a dad and he's not.

Of course we ended up doing nothing about it, but we're both still curious to see where people would side on this.

Thanks in advance to anyone that participates! Your feed back is very valuable to us! LOL

Well, as a parent of 2 daughters, if I found out two grown men found a kid sneaking out of my house and decided to not say anything to me, I would probably be a hell of a lot less cordial to the neighbor.

I agree with you there. But since it's not my neighbor and I had and still have not ever interacted with him, decided it wasn't my place to say anything (rightly or wrongly).

That is a great question, one worth thinking longer on.

Initial reaction is to let it ride, unless Dad comes around asking if you saw his kid out and about. No reason to lie.

This one is tough, as the old me would have said leave the kids alone and let them have fun. Fast forward to now with two young girls who will eventually be that age, I would want to know, BUT I also wouldn't want to be the one to tell the dad.

Don't think that kid didn't tell your friend's neighbor's kid that he ran into you. It'll start with her asking your buddy to not say anything, then buy a pack of smokes, then some beer. Next thing you know she's wanting to have friends over at his house so her parents don't find out. Now she's pregnant and the parents are mad at her so she spills the beans, tells them everything. Your buddy now has his mugshot in the paper for contributing to the delinquency of minors. The guy next door will blame your buddy for everything that ever went wrong. The rest of the neighbors will start talking about how he probably has a thing for young kids, and that's why he was ok letting them party in his house. You know how neighbors talk, am I right? Rumors are going to spread at work. It'll end up on social media, of course. Some uber-offended types will make it their life's goal to upset his routines and way of life. Now his neighbors are grandparents to a teenage single mom, because you know that cat ain't gonna stick around if he's already used to getting some strange. None of the other neighbors will talk to him, the kids from all over are going to harass him. Eggs, TP, ding-dong-ditch, flaming bags of poop. Some of the bold ones might mess with any vehicles in the driveway. Now he's gotta pick up and move to a new town and find a new job. All because you and him didn't want to get involved with the neighbor and his kid. Or this could be completely off base and everything will be fine.

the neighbor will thank you, but the teen will probably hate you forever if you rat on her.
I'd just mention to her, that you seen that occur, and as a good neighbor you'll let it slide this time, but to not push her luck.

We don't. Just assuming. However, I don't think that really changes the question. Should I be a bro to the husband or the teen if the teen is sleeping with the wife?

In the simplest terms, it comes down to what is right vs what is wrong.
I'd ask the dad next door if he knew about it, as he may have given permission. If not, then the wrong-doer is the sneaky lad, and the owner of the property, and parent of the girl has the right to know.
Maybe he will decide to "let the kids have fun".............nah, maybe not.

Really depends. If I am friends with the neighbor I would probably say something to him.

In my current situation, I don't really converse with any of our neighbors regularly and only knocked on a door once when a dog got loose from the fenced in back yard. I like dogs and didn't want to see it get hurt.

For all I know the young man could have been there for any number of reasons and it really isn't my business unless I know of something illegal or dangerous happening.

Same question if its your daughter?

You said your cordial with your neighbor, do you even know the teens name?
