Golf for you: Socially driven or competition driven?

The pace thread got me me thinking, what drives you the MOST in golf? Is it the social aspects? Or is it the competition?

Yes, for most I know both will be the answer, but, what is the LEADER for you in this game?

I was going to say the same thing. I play a lot of solo rounds, so that's definitely not my main driving force. I do love playing with friends/family, but if no one is available I'm still getting out there.

Obviously both are great aspects of the game, but for me it is a little more competition than social honestly. I am constantly striving for improvement and having fun doing it is a nice bonus.

... The social aspect is a nice bonus, but secondary to competition with others and myself.

Looks like a common thread for guys on THP on a Saturday! I love the social part when I can play golf with my friends, but much more often I'm going solo, and then its about the personal competition to do well, and maybe even get a little better.

It used to be driven by competition but these days it's more socially driven. I just like getting a break being an adult and hanging out with buddies on the course. The best of both worlds for me is some kind of team competition like a THP event or local two/four man team.

    Social aspect for sure.

My weekly league is about as competitive as I'd like to get on a regular basis. I mean, sure we play for drinks, a few bucks, or the lunch tab on a regular basis but I don't really count that as "competition"

Personal competition for me as most my rounds are solo. When I am playing with friends and family it is more of a Social event then competition, although there may be a round of drinks on the line from time to time.

I'll vote for the personal competition. I don't play in many tournaments, and I don't have many competitive buddies, but I like to be tough on myself in regards to my game.

As much as I love the social aspect, the competitive aspect wins out. As others have said, I also play a lot of solo rounds so it's about my game.

When I got into golf it was just for fun and I like being outside. Generally it has been social, not competitive. When I got back into golf last season, I tried to take it seriously and really improve. Now I'm competing with myself and I'm losing. I have idea why I play now. It's more frustrating than anything. Trying to get back to having fun again.
