Forgot to add picking up your left/right/short/backward attempts at hitting balls too.

Way over the top reaction, nobody is stealing anything. Calling them scum? Really? Proud of yourself?

Golfer1 pays for a bucket but only hits half of them, golfer2 comes along and finds the 'leftover' balls and hits them. The course already got paid for those balls, is golfer2 supposed to go pay for the leftover balls before hitting them? Making it where the course gets paid twice for the same balls?

Im going inside and paying for my bucket/bag and hitting my bag. If theres a few laying around leftover from others fair game, but going in without throwing down would be frowned upon.

My range has a range card for members and tokens for paying customers. Anything left on our mats or on the grass are scooped up by range attendants OR given to some of the kids that frequent the range.

It's a good thing that people are practicing and, or, making use of driving ranges.

I've seen staff come out and no one's ever said a thing to me about it. I've had a staff member ask me if I want another bucket before they take the barrel down. So I was really curious to see if other people experience this...it's an odd fine line for sure.
The only opinion that really matters here is that of the course. Asking them might be a good way to find that out.

In the OP he says "I've been showing up and using the range for free." To me that means when he gets to the course/range he doesn't go inside to check in/pay he looks to see if there are balls out there to hit. Since there are balls that means he can hit the range for free that day. If he goes in and pays for a bucket/bag I don't care how many of the left over balls he hits because he paid to use the facility. Just going in and hitting left over balls is stealing.....no way around it.

I used to have an annual range pass at a course that had free range balls with tee times (den caddies at all stations). Every time I had to check in to let them know I was a pass holder. They had to finally stop leaving balls out and charge for range balls for tee times because scum kept showing up stealing range balls for practice. They now no longer offer range passes. There is an impact to this type of behavior.

Yes there is, i just explained that. It's not stealing. The leftover balls have been paid for, the course can't get paid twice for the same balls.

Your paying to use the facility not just to hit the balls. I would go in and get a small bucket and then go and hit some of the leftovers. Just showing up and hitting leftover balls is wrong IMO.

if balls are meant for paying members then imo its then wrong for the non playing member to go and use them.

if it just a matter of a warm up bucket left incomplete then I see no issue at all. Whether its my often frequented course/s or my frequented practice range center. Most all people leaving an unfinished bucket expect another to then finish hitting them. If im hitting a warmup bucket and am called to the tee, the first thing Im doing is leaving them behind for anyone to finish. If I m at the range and don't finish my 100 ball bucket Im leaving them for the next whoever wants them.

Ive supported my county courses with so many greens fees and my range with so many bucket fees for so many years both that I have no issue accepting unfinished balls that are there. I don't go and hit with that intent. I buy my warm up and if the range buy my token. But I will hit whats left over from another in addition. On rare occasion at the course If there are a few balls one left behind and I hadn't planned on hiting a warmup I have no issue hitting those 6,8,10 balls whatever if I decide to. I feel nothing at all guilty about any if this. In fact I think the course is ridiculous with their 6 dollar 20 ball warm up. With greens fees purchased imo a warmup should be just a couple bucks.

All that said I do not ever go to my course with the intent of hitting leftover balls nor of course do I do that at my range practice center. Im a paying customer and I go with intent to pay for what I use. But just that sometimes I get some extra and sometimes I leave mine for another.
    I golf because I can But I stink because I can't

It's a tough one, and it sounds like the course is not really doing the right thing to make things clear.

But the fact that you are even asking the question suggests that you know the answer already.

If you take something that you didn't pay for its stealing. The fact that someone else paid for it is irrelevant. If the person who paid gives them to you or the pro-shop says "go for it" then all good.

JBs analogy is a good one. But here is another one. If there was an abandoned cart next to the green with the key in it would you hop in and use it?. It's already been paid for right?

Funny how we justify based on the value.

If you really think it's okay, then go ask the pro.

who would be the aggrieved party in this case?

here's another thinker: would you pick up an abandoned prov1?

My course has a very nice busy practice facility that I use nearly every Sunday morning. There are half empty warm up buckets all down the range when I get there around 8:00 am. One morning I came to practice putting only and did not buy a bucket. The practice green was wet from dew so I went to the range and hit balls while the dew evaporated. The thought crossed my mind that I could do this every week if I wanted to but it felt wrong.

I buy a small bucket every trip to the range, usually that is enough for me but I know there will be extra balls if I want to hit them. I do not feel like I am doing anything wrong and I can assure you nobody at this very busy successful course gives a crap about some extra range balls.

If the Balls were already paid for I don't see a Issue. If your stealing balls then that is wrong.
I often show up and someone says hey I left a few in a bucket have at it. Should I pay for them? I think not.

I've explained it twice now. If he PAYS for a small bag/bucket then he can go wild with the leftover balls, that is the courses issue. If he goes and sees the extra balls and makes a beeline for the range so it is FREE then he is stealing and maybe even trespassing.

Nobody is suggesting the course gets paid twice for the same balls. The course is entitled to get paid for every customer that uses their facility.
