It has taken me a week to be able to say it. A week ago exactly I had to say goodbye to my first pup and best friend. His body finally stopped fighting. He was always so sick, so happy, so loving. I miss him all the time.

It was the hardest thing Ive ever had to do. I miss you bud.

    Sorry Molten, it's so awful.

    ****

Our recent Canine Chronicles have been something too. We lost our Carly the Chocolate Lab on New Year's Eve and our Cane Corso, Clyde, was scheduled to be put down this past Monday at 3 PM.

His hips are going and he had/has a terribly persistent skin infection. He wasn't walking well at all, stumbling at times, and even fell backward into his poop on Friday while relieving himself, rolling over in it.

I was beside myself, so very painfully wanted to put him out of his misery ASAP. But the Mrs and our daughter were in Florida for a wedding and begged me to wait for their return.

In the meantime, I dedicated to task just as I would at any time in his life. I bathed him outside daily with an anti-fungal/anti-bacterial shampoo that we had on hand (Jax 'n Daisy). Treated his ears heavily with Zymox and gave him 2 probiotic capsules with each of his two meals per day. Still, I made the call last Thursday for the Monday appointment to put him down (ladies were returning Sunday).

Amazingly, starting on Saturday, he began to get himself up whereas before he was helpless. His gait became much less encumbered, almost free at times. He's trotted some, hasn't done that in months. Still compromised from the effects of hip dysplasia but getting around no worse than he had a few months ago.

The disgusting, mucous-like discharges on his underbelly and armpits dried, skin turned scorched red (a listed affect of the shampoo), then began to clear and hair is already growing back!

We're talking only 4 days ago, he visibly appeared as if he would go completely lame at any moment. His walk was more like a labored skulk as if clumsily prowling but doing so only because of tremendous discomfort. His rampant skin infection made his underbelly look much like a leper's skin, raised, deeply etched, clammy with mucous.

I fully accept the reality of his situation and we cannot let him suffer. It could be days or weeks... but it wasn't Monday at 3 PM.

And I've so very much indulged in the last 1.5 days since.

Miraculously, he now wants to play when he hadn't in weeks. He eats like he hadn't for days. He whines his so affectionate whine when he gets hugs and kisses when he hadn't for over a disturbing while.

He'll be 11 in August, if when August comes he's still with us. But he's here now and that notion wells my eyes just as much as the thought of inevitably losing him.

This may be a fleeting reprieve for our proud Clyde but it was absolutely deserved on his part and so thoroughly embraced by us all.

    Molten,

Sorry for your loss man. Too many times we have to go through that and it's not a good feeling. We did that a few years ago with our 1st guy. It does suck. You will eventually get sucked in by another one and smile. So grieve, remember the good times and push through. There is more sunshine out there. Trust me, it will find you, you won't have to go look for it.

The hardest part of this page is reading about people losing their loved pets. It is also a testament to the compassion and love that we have for them through out their lives. Bittersweet for sure.

This is one of my favorite pics of the dog. A few years ago we asked the kids what they wanted to do, and they wanted to go to Sedona, AZ and take the dog. Raven and the rest of the family had a blast that week!

I wonder if dogs get mad at us when they spend all that time to find the perfect place to poop, just for us to bag it up and take it away.

Stella could use some good vibes this weekend. Shes our six year old golden who lost some of her appetite and had some labored breathing over the past week. My wife took her to the vet today and they found after blood tests and X-rays that she is real anemic so she is on meds right now. We dont think its from anything she ate or got into. She showed a spring in her step after a big steroid shot and she did eat some and she goes back for a checkup on Monday to see if the meds are making Stella improve. The vet did say its 50/50 between her immune system which is treatable with meds, or its cancer. She is the sweetest friend and we hope she gets better over the next few days because we dont want to lose her but we dont want her to suffer either. Fingers crossed for good news. We love this picture of her so I cant help posting it again.
