Lately I have found setting up on my irons without doing a forward press hs resulted in much crisper iron shots. Also it seems to eliminate my over the top tendencies.

Anyone else had any success with anything like this?

I know what you mean. I have the same success with that setup. Maybe it just means that we're doing something else wrong.

Perhaps eliminating the forward press helps keep your back shoulder (right for right-handed golfers) lower, which is a proper alignment? I keep my hands fairly neutral and since doing that, my iron shots are much more consistent and crisp. While I do have some rearward shaft-lean with my short irons, I'm not pressing my hands forward. In one issue of Golf Digest I have, there's a tip on keeping your hands in the same position regardless of which club you're using. This consistency keeps you in the same position at address.

When I started I put a forward press on all my shots and the shot dsipersion was horrible. Since I have changed I have seen much better results.
