While we were down there for winter break we learned that the Mountian Course in La Quinta has what they call their Little Links Program. If you bring a junior after 2:30 not only does the junior play 9 holes for free from special shortened tee boxes that were perfect for my 8 year old, the adult plays for free too!
This is no schlocky dog track either. It is a first rate Pete Dye dsign, playing along the mountians with plenty of water, bunkers and waste areas. unlike a lot of resort courses, this one demands strong shot making as any misses around these small, hard, fast greens are often severly punished. The greens are frustratingly flat, with subtle breaks that are hard to see in the rolling landscape.
I guess the caveat to the junior program is that it is a lot of course for a beginner to handle. My 8 year old is a good golfer and loved it, but I would never bring his sister who only golfs casually, this is a players course and she would just be frustrated.
I will certianly go back to play all 18 the next time we go.
