I have four and fortunately they were all witnessed. But, I would still count one if no witness was there. As for the 2nd part of your question... hitting shots from a tee box and dunking one would not constitute a hole in one as defined by USGA. It must be a drive from a tee box as part of a 9 hole or 18 hole round of golf. So, while you can personally feel great about sinking one during practice shots, it wouldn't be deemed official.

My only HIO wasn’t exactly by myself, but no credible witnesses. I had my youngest child with me. What stinks is I couldn’t see it go in so I didn’t assume it did, it was tracking right at the flag but the green was above me. I said “oh, that’s got a chance”. It was on the 10th hole and an older gentleman was on the putting green and he looked up. I almost asked him to check it out with me, but I’ve had hundreds of shots like that and usually find them off the back, etc.

What’s really crazy is three holes later I had another one that missed going in by half an inch. I was almost hoping it wouldn’t go in because no one would ever believe me on that, lol.

BTW-I 100% count it. I know it happened and that’s good enough for me.

I would count it if I ever got a HIO solo, but would feel weird telling people outside my family at first. They know I would never lie about something like that, shoot I might even FaceTime my dad so we can chat as I drive from the tee to green and pick up the ball from the cup. At the end of the day, if random people don't believe you, not your problem. I know it went in and that's all that matters to me.

Congrats oiler! I concur that it counts as a legit HIO. Witnesses might make things a little more satisfying on some levels but you still made the miracle shot. I'm glad a USAF buddy saw my only HIO firsthand. He's the only other person that can confirm just how incredibly horrid and undeservedly lucky that hard bladed shank really was. I wish I still had the scorecard because that '1' was just so out of place and I don't even know what hole it came on. Travel delay in Waco so we squeezed in an unplanned nine at a muni (front?/back?) and the only time I've ever golfed anywhere near Waco.

As for the re-tee, "ace", aka GREAT 3, I got my all time favorite skin that way on golf weekend at my little bros home turf over in Wichita. While we waited at a little par 3 over a pond my brother and his buddies recounted my brother's only HIO, which came at that hole. After dunking swing #1 I holed out my re-tee and my 3 stood up. My bro and one buddy were dancing too but both 3 putted it, lol. I make sure to rub that skin in every chance I get.

What's the old Bob Jones quote about golf and competition golf?

If someone asks me what my personal best score is I'll tell them two numbers. One is the best score I've ever shot while playing for money (or in a tournament or any other competitive situation). The other is the slightly lower score I shot one day while playing by myself with nothing on the line.

I'd say it's the same for Aces. My only Ace was witnessed by the two guys I was playing with that day so I just tell people "I've had one hole-in-one in my life". But if I made another one playing solo tomorrow I'd change that answer to "I've had two but only one of them was witnessed". I think an unwitnessed hole-in-one is still an Ace but it's a different thing than an "official" one witnessed and attested.

A couple months ago I was playing solo behind a group of guys I know. As soon as they cleared the green on a longish Par 3 I went ahead and hit. From my point of view the ball looked like it was going to roll right into the cup. While it was still rolling I yelled, "Can I get a witness???" and a couple of them looked back toward the green. One of them made a dismissive hand wave as if to say, "You bothered us for that?". When I got to the hole sure enough it was right on line but must have been nearly four feet short. D'Oh!

I have a teaching pro buddy who spent a decade or so teaching lessons at combination Par 3 course, driving range, practice facility. Real nice setup. But in that time he probably holed out a dozen or more times on the shorter Par 3's that were like 80, 90, 100 yards. And a couple times on the longer ones. He doesn't tell people he's had 20 (or whatever the number is) Aces. But he'll gladly recount the two he's had playing real golf in tournaments.

There was a book called "Golf - Chicken Soup for the Soul" and there was a story in it about this kid who worked with his Dad on a rural golf course, next to some train tracks. The kid hit a hole-in-one, playing by himself while a train was rolling through. He went and told his Dad about the HIO and his Dad said it did not count because no one saw it. The kid accepted this and went on with his life.

A couple of weeks later the train engineer stopped by and said he had witnessed it when he was rolling through. Dad told the kid, "well now it counts - you got a hole in one".

    I'd say it counts.

Would just be a LITTLE less fulfilling not having anyone witness it.

But whatever man. Write down the 1 on the scorecard!

On the bright side, if no one is there to see it, maybe you don't have to buy a round at the clubhouse... hmmm...

This always seemed insane to me. Get punished for an ace? My home course does it better...if you make an Ace they put out a sheet in the clubhouse and everybody buys YOU a beer, and you get to just drink for free all year until entire list is crossed out.

addendum: no I didn’t get a list. With no witness I just didn’t feel it counted enough.

Yeah, I never really got that tradition either. Although it’s fitting that golf even screws you when you hit an ace, haha.

I like how your club does it. If you’re in my group and you hit a HIO, I’m buying your beer.

Exactly. I’ll happily buy my group a round or two to celebrate. But the whole clubhouse? Makes no sense (beyond that golf is still a country club activity so money not really an issue for many).

I really like how your course does it oiler. Hope that becomes more prevalent. Since mine came at a random (dry) course and was just with the one buddy I was TDY with, I waited until we got back to host a kegger for all the guys in the shop. I knew I'd probably never get another ace so I wanted to do something to commemorate it, regardless how ugly my ace really was.

It’s interesting this thread comes up. I’ve had one HIO (witnessed). Last week playing by myself, hit a perfect 8 iron on a par 3. Hit and nearly went in stopping six inches behind the hole. First thought was, damn, if it went in, nobody would have seen it.

The time I thought I had a solo HIO I busted out the phone and recorded the ride to the green only to see it hiding behind the pin it hit. Sun was behind the hole, that kinda sucked.
