sox-was that from the USGA website? I am interested in the ladies stats. thanks!

Happy to be in the top half.

My 14 index is about 350 of 550 at my club though, so bottom half there.

Sox-thanks! I must have asked as you were posting!!

Keep in mind this is of course the percentage of golfers who have registered for a handicap. I think it is safe to assume that a fair amount of higher handicap golfers have not registered with the USGA.

Soxy-

I'm a little confused (no surprise there, huh?)

The second column is % of people with that exact index, and the third column is % of people with that index or better?

For example:

10 4.66% 25.10%

For a 10 index, 4.66% of the total number of people with official USGA handicap indexes have an index of 10 (presumably, 10.00 to 10.99), and 25.10% of the total number of people with an index have an index of 10 or better?

I find it interesting that only 1.36% of men report the maximum index (36+) while 13.84% of women report having the maximum index (40+). Methinks there are a lot of men with vanity handicaps.

Are you really surprised by this???

Exactly

Are you really surprised by this???

Nope. What does surprise me is the number of women with the maximum handicap index who went to the trouble of getting an official GHIN/USGA index.

Yep- I'd bet at average muni probably less than 25% of the golfers on any given Saturday have ever registered.

Yes, I would say so. Otherwise, over 90% break 100 semi regularly! Riiiight! I don't know the correct stats, but if everyone were honest I would guess it's closer to 50%.

For the record, I don't have an official handicap.

question on handicap:
I don't have one, but going over my score cards, I average em out to be 'round a 93. What type of handicap would that roughly be, do ya need slope ratings or can it be figured without.
Thanks

Bulldog:

Start here: www.oobgolf.com, or one of several other handicap tracking sites that have been discussed on THP. You can't just go off your average. if you regularly play really hard courses, your handicap will be way lower than your average while if you play really easy courses, your handicap will be higher than your average. (For example, you have a guy who averages 93 at Bethpage Black and someone who averages 93 on the easiest course in the country. Who is going to have a better handicap?)

Thanks, Yeah have a couple here that are short & Tex Conover is 6863 yds (white) & 7361 (blues).
Also I'm still finding my way around the site, could ya point me to threads for handicap.
Thanks.

If you kick out the women registering the maximum handicap, the mode for men is 14 and for women 28. Median is 15 and 28. Which is consistent with Harry's theory.

At my club, you have to have a registered handicap to play in any events or leagues.

The vast majority of handicaps I have seen do not hold up in tournament play. They are self kept and are not usually accurate. Most people move the ball and fail to take all penalty strokes. I would say most are 3-5 strokes too low.

Hey Bulldog, Here is a link to a good thread about handicap tracking:

I recommend anybody that is serious about the game, get a GHIN. But if member guests, and other tournies are not your thing, I really liked digital divot.

Exactly. I think what the stat actually shows, using you numbers, is that over 90% of people who expend the effort to post an official score break 100 semi regularly. That doesn't surprise me at all, as there is some significant self-selection bias in that group.

GHIN is the most popular, but you can have a NGN number also. Both are acceptable for tournament play. I use NGN because that is what Golf Channel Game Tracker uses.

Be still my beating heart! :lashes:

Okay, back on topic...

Soxy, do you have a link to that? It would be fun to run some basic analyses without having to key in the data from scratch.

Great information...the USGA does not happen to list how many people are registerd with USGA handicaps do they? It would be interesting to apply those percenatges to actual number of people to see how many people are as good or better then you are.

I guess otherwise you could look around each time you go to the range or golf course and assume (you know what they say about that word) that the % (next to your handicap on the list) is how many people there are as good as you are...or worse :D

Ok, I only had 6 useable scores to use & it gave me a 16.6 handicap. I'll start adding more as I go.
Ya'll are killin my theory of PROCRASTINATION
Hard work pays off later BUT
procrastination pays off now.
