Cooks Creek is always a good bet if going to the south of the city. I was going to say to try Oakhurst CC but apparently thats been sold.

Everything good around here has been sold over the last 5 years, its ridiculous. Winding Hollow (best public course), Ables on Avery (best driving range), The Golf Depot (next best driving range with a par 3 that was awesome), Four Seasons range (good range with a golf dome for the winter), Oakhurst, etc, etc.

Played Oakhurst a few times, really was a solid course. Hated to see it get sold.

Ill vouche for Deer Ridge. Beautiful course. Greens can be a bit of a problem. I played it this spring, right after they punched it. Had them rolling probably 12ish. Downhill it was like playing plinko. Very not a fan of that. If theyd just slowed them down some it would have been fine. Still one of the best area courses, but if they dont have the greens playing decent, its just stupid hard.

Last round last fall, we get to 18. I had a 20 footer for birdie to the right side of the hole. I miss it slightly on the high side and it ends up 20 feet directly below the hole. I send three straight putts that get to the hole and just miss, which sent the ball right back to where I started from. In disgust I picked the ball up.

It can be flat out unfair if they arent smart about green speed or hole placement. If theyre fair, its very gettable.

Ive been on the high 80s there twice with over 40 putts if that tells you anything. This spring I chipped in 2x and still had over 40 putts. It can be borderline rediculous. Travel a hair north and youll hit Ashland Golf Club, formerly Country Club. A tough but very fair test. You probably wont make many birdies but itll play fair. Play to under the hole and youll be just fine. Its a risk/reward course that its pretty easy to make a lot of pars if you hit it well, even hitting long iron off most tees. Very tough to make many birdies.

The subtle nuances of the course will take several rounds to understand. The first time I played it with my dad, I was playing really well. I rattled off (I think?) 13 straight pars without really having a great birdie chance.

Its super fair. Itll reward great shots but itll take a couple of them in a row to make a birdie on it. The greens are fast and true, and flat enough to make you think they break less than they do. I wouldnt be shocked too much if I figured it out one day and went LOW. I also am much more likely to go high. Tough. Fair. Its all you can expect of a course.

That is fair assessment of Deer Ridge. Took a flier on that course and used it for a customer appreciation outing and it did not disappoint. Service and food was great. The course itself was in country club condition. We played a scramble, but I can see how difficult the greens could be if you were golfing your own ball.

I'll have to give Ashland Golf Club a try, thanks.

Yeah, Deer Ridge is nice. They just have to be a little smarter about green speed/hole placement.

Youll like Ashland G.C. Its in Country Club shape. Rates are reasonable. The first two years they went public they were on GolfNow. I played a lot of 10.00 rounds there, which was awesome. Range was even free then too. Even at full rate I think theyre under $50.00 at peak times. Look at WMFDs price drop store, last I knew they were running 18 w/cart for $26.00, which is still a steal.

Itll challenge you for sure, but when you get done youll probably think it was a fair course. Everything is just gettable enough that youll face a lot of choices about going for broke or playing it safe. 15 and 18 in particular. 15 is a medium length par 5. Its reachable but youll likely be hitting FW if you go for it. Theres lake short and left and OB long and right. 18 is a driveable par 4, but other than a 10ft wide gap, the green is surrounded by bunkers. The smart play is to hit an iron to whatever youre shortest full swing club is. Im not very smart so I almost always go for it, which usually bites me in the butt.

I loved Winding Hollow. They sold it to amazon tore down the club house then stopped and bought another place in Etna. I drive by it all the time even stopped and walked a few holes. Untouched!!

Denison is a great public track just a bit outside of the city, out west a bit. Delaware Golf Club is another nice public track up north worth playing.

My buddies dad is (was?) a member out there, hes played it and said its nice. Definitely a second rate CC in Cbus given the competition of Muirfield, Scioto, The Golf Club, Double Eagle, Brookside, Pinnacle, Wedgewood, etc but I am sure its still a great track to play. Coming from any public course a private course is almost guaranteed to be a breath of fresh air and ive never heard a bad thing about Little Turtle.

Edit: Im thinking of The Lakes, not sure about Little Turtle, but my guess still stands its a good track.

Im playing at Wedgewood next Thursday, will be my first time out there. Looking forward to it.

Thanks! I could not find that lol

Not as long as I though it would be from the whites. (I play from the tips). Should be a fun course then, looking forward to playing it!

I have a friend who is a member there so might be able to play a practice round the day before.

Gah, my buddy with the membership at Wedgewood sprained his ankle over the weekend (very badly) so there goes my Thursday round. Have tried to line up with him so many times and something always happens.

    Playing at NorthStar tomorrow though

Brief update on NorthStar for Spring 2019 -- longest, thickest rough I've seen at a public course in a long, long time. VERY challenging, was difficult to even find balls often times. The course overall was in good condition, although the greens could use a bit more work. The blue tees were mostly back by me at the black tees, so it seems like they are making a concerted effort to make it a challenging course. Still probably my favorite public course in the nearby Columbus area, since Winding Hollow was closed down a few years back.

Have any of the Columbus guys been to The Golf Room? Thinking about joining there to practice on the Trackman a few times a week. Curious to hear if anyone here has any experience there?
