Some background: 18 months ago I was fitted for new clubs after a long hiatus from golf. I started working with their pro, a nice, knowledgable guy, as I thought I could use a review after 10 years of very occasional play. He did my fitting as well. We tried all of the major brands and their shaft combos. No 3rd-party shafts were tried as GG just doesn't have them and I didn't know any better at the time. We settled on the Callaway Razr X irons with Callaway's own 75g graphite shaft in Regular flex. That combo gave me the best distance and dispersion of any other so it turned out to be a clear choice.
This year I swapped the 5 and 6 irons for hybrids since the 3 and 4 hybrids were so easy to hit. I tried Razr X 5 and 6 hybrids, hit them great and decided to keep them. My ball-striking still has good and bad days though. My normal shot is a slight draw, but when swinging poorly a hook and sometimes a slice occur. I started wondering if my iron shafts had become a little soft as my swing has evolved and were exagerating movement. Not causing hooks, or slices of course, but maybe making them a little worse.
In the meantime I changed my wedges. I was struggling to control distance with it the Razr X wedges. I stumbled into a deal on some Miura wedge heads and wanted a slightly firmer shaft so I put Aerotech Steelfiber i95s in them. Love the combo. My short game still needs work, but I had much more control and accuracy with these wedges and I attribute it to the shafts.
So that lead to wondering how the Aerotech's would perform in my irons. Once in a while I feel like one of those hooks moves more than was warranted so I put an Aerote3ch i8o in my 6 iron and compare it to the 6i with the OEM shaft, and the 6h. Because I always thought shafts can make a big difference in how a club performs, I also comared my old and beloved Plamer Axiom 6i with light-steel shafts and at the end put the Callaway OEM shaft in it to see if it would make a big change. Part of me always thought that old perimeter weighted clubs are still competitive if provided modern shafts, so why not.
The results didn't vary as much as I thought they would so maybe the Cally 75g shafts really were a good fit for me. The Axioms were transformed by the new shaft which was interesting. LM tests were performed on two different days, and I thought the second day...with the Aerotech installed in the Razr X and the Callaway shaft in the Axiom, was not as good of a day for me, but that's all we have. On both days my SS with a 6i were slowere than in the past. I must be getting old.
Here's the summary. Looking forward to throughts on 6i/6h numbers in general as well as the old Axiom vs Axiom data.
