So my practice ball developed a tumor today, I have no idea how this is even possible.

You need to stop smokin' the ball when you hit it...tumors like that will appear.

I've seen that happen from heat. Once upon a time a couple of golf balls got a bit closer to a propane heater while hitting into a net in the garage. They did something similar, but there was also some discoloration.
 
I have a swing box that I hit into, cracked a chrome soft before but this is definitely new

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe at least reach out to them to see if they want it for QA/QC examination?
