Last summer I was passing blood in my urine. Met with my family Dr. At that time, I felt like I had to go all the time and when I did, I had very little flow. Dr. sent a blood and urine sample in and it came back negative for any cancer, so he put me on an antibiotic and figured I had a bladder infection and maybe a stone or two. Within a week or so, things cleared up and all seemed fine.

Two weeks ago, I again had some minor pain on my left side and was passing blood. Took me a week to get to see my Dr. (a new one this month), and she first ordered a blood and urine test at the lab. Her thought was possible kidney or bladder cancer at the worse and a maybe a stone. She also put me on an antibiotic to be safe. Results came back and once again no cancer showed up.

Last Wednesday I went to a local hospital and had a CT scan done. Three without dye and three with dye added. Late last Friday my Dr called me and said I had one stone, 6 to 7mm in size blocking my urinary tract between my left kidney and bladder plus another 7mm stone in my left kidney plus several smaller ones. She told me she would make the needed arrangements to have the stones removed asap.

Today, she called and told me my appointment was set up for MAY 28th at 8:00am. I was floored. The pain is not severe but it is there all the time. I'm still of course passing blood and she has pointed out several times that the chance of me "passing" this stone is ZERO, as it is just too big and more than likely odd shaped, so it is stuck.

I'm at a loss for words. So she is telling me I have to live with this the next month and a half. Makes me wonder about the state of our health care system. Good thing there was no cancer found.

I live in a rural area and it is tough to get anything done without taking time off of work and traveling much further away to see another Dr not to mention our insurance has us locked into a specific health network which rules out other closer urologist. Rant over.

Go to the emergency room and pretend the pain is worse than it is?

That is about it. urgent care is another option. IYou will have to pay a deductible but Bette than living with pain.

In Canada you'd be waiting at least 6 months but it would be free. The problem with free healthcare is that every single person with a cold or the flu is clogging up the hospitals.

Hey at least it's affordable now....

Oh wait.

I love this, I saw it on Facebook a while back:

Having moved here from the UK 2 years ago, I could go on a serious rant about the health care over here.

Healthcare is a mess in this country for the average Joe, I certainly don't have any great ideas on how to fix it. I feel your pain though. Many years ago now it took doctors 6 months and 40 lbs lost for them to figure out I had Crohn's disease (actually once I saw a specialist she figured it out in 30 minutes). Thankfully, I had (because most companies still offered) good insurance back then.

I had stones a few years back that I ended up passing. I've had some pain but nothing like that, makes me cringe just thinking about it. Hopefully they can get you taken care of sooner than the end of May!

Made a couple of calls today, and I'm hoping to see another urologist ASAP, even if I have to pay the entire bill out of pocket, because more than likely I'll have to go out of my insurance "network". Our Dr. in town moved away this winter and we just got this new Dr in town this month. It is my first time seeing her and it is the last.

I called her today to let her know I slept about 3 hours last night and my urine looks like Hawaiian Punch. She had nothing to offer, saying it is now in the hands of the urologist, on May 28th. BS. Pretty sad.

This is one reason why I generally go right to the specialist that I think can help. Why pay two co-pays.

I don't know. I was really just a kid then. How was I to know I had a chronic disease?

Can't do that in my network. Have to start with your regular Dr first and then the Dr sends you to the specialist. When I had the CT scans last Wednesday, it was my understanding that the results would go straight to the urologist (who's office did the scans) but no, they were sent back to my Dr for her to send right back to the urologist, with of course 48+ hours between before I got the results. This way you get to pay co-pay after co-pay after co-pay.

I'm going on my own tomorrow on this one. I'll find another urologist, and a new Dr.

My healthcare rant is that I pay $600 a month for insurance with a $3000 deductible now. I used to pay $400 with no deductible 4 years ago.

I haven't hit my deductible since we had to switch to this plan, so I pay $600 a month for absolutely no benefits and still have paid everything out of pocket.

But, as JRod pointed out, at least it's affordable!

Sorry to hear that man, but I know what your talking about. My Dermatologist saw me And said I think u have a trouble spot thats possibly cancer. He then says for me to make an appointment to take it out. Hos nurse then tells me it'll be over a month be4 I can be seen......what? U just told me I might have cancer. Our healthcare system is screwed

That really sucks. I hope you get it taken care of and get reimbursed. The healthcare system in the country has always been screwed up. My doctor is the first to admit it.

He was able to catch a liver problem early on through blood work and the next day I was getting an ultrasound and the following day a MRI. He said it normally takes weeks if not months to get the testing approved and scheduled. I'm very fortunate that I have the plan I have.

I have worked in the rural health environment for a number of years. I must tell you, that I do not understand what apparently is happening to you-it is inexcusable. As others have suggested, do not rely on your primary care physician, get to a hospital. While I have no experience in Indiana, in the locales where we operate, we are required to have transfer agreements with larger neighboring facilities. Additionally, there are no insurance providers operating in the area with whom we do not have agreements. Not only because they are needed to accommodate the needs of the community residents, such is demanded by the medical staff. Actually, we have signed agreements with carriers that are trying to establish themselves in the community. So I am not sure why there is no immediate in network care available.

I have had kidney stones as well (never go on the Atkins diet, I couldn't handle the proteins). While I had pain, it only occurred when the stones were moving and I didn't continuingly pass blood. That makes me think your problem is extremely bad. So again, get to a hospital. I understand that you are in a network, but given medical necessity, many will approve out of network care. I would document your immediate condition and needs and make such a request.

The scenario you describe will only get worse. The political advantage of lower premiums will be disguised by higher deductibles and controlled services. Your current scenario is a glimpse into our future. It particularly will be difficult for folks in rural settings. Many of the applicable laws, rules and regulations are written and developed by those with an urban perspective. Sometimes, they forget to accommodate the specific needs of isolated rural communities.

I decided today, that when the pain does increase to the point where I've had enough, I'm just going to the emergency room at the hospital where my urologist is and where the scans were done. I'll just go at about 5am and tell them the pain is unbearable and they will have no choice but to act. I'll pick the day I guess, not them. I'm not waiting until May the 28th.

You'd be surprised dude, they will have no problem leaving you in the hospital in pain until the next morning when the doctor comes back.
