In need of techno assistance

As I read other threads in other folders, it is becoming increasingly obvious that I must gain some knowledge regarding the use of social media and other digital capabilities. I realize that in order for me to enjoy the full advantages that this site offers, I must acquire the ability to use social media and other techno capabilities. It's not because I do not want to participate fully on this site, it's just that I don't know how. I don't know how to create an avatar, I don't know how to post a picture, I have never tweeted, used instagram or other such things.

Admittedly, as an old dog, it is going to be difficult to learn new tricks. So I guess I am asking for help and suggestions regarding my endeavor to educate myself in this regard. I live close to a local community college, perhaps there's a class, perhaps there's a book for dummies. To those that are not in the IT arena, how did you learn? I need help, anything would be appreciated.
 
I only have a Facebook and Twitter account and to be honest, I read a lot more than I post

Once you have registered for an account it is pretty simple to follow, so don't worry about it too much, and 99.9% of the time there will be instructions on t'internet that you can read to help you through

These days you can find pretty much anything using Google
 
Just dive in. Get Twitter and Instagram accounts and their apps on your devices. Search THP golf on both. Start following people. You will quickly learn how to #. Start making the odd posts on Twitter. Start uploading the odd pic on Instagram.
When you create accounts, stick to the same name. Let me know what you go with. I'll start following you.

You don't need a course on this stuff.

To be honest, it is fairly straight forward once you actually get into it on instagram, there's a button you use to search for people (the button that looks like a magnification lens) and you can search for account names like bridgestone golf, THPgolf, etc... mine is DWChockey13 but to post you click the camera button and can either take a picture right then and there to post, or use one from your camera library, I wouldn't worry about filters and editing yet as that's when it get's complicated.
 
When you hear someone say "Google it" they mean go to www.google.com and type in a question. You will get a myriad of links to choose from to find the answer you are looking for on just about any subject. If you want to learn something type in "How do I" followed by what you want to know. etc "How do I make an avatar". As far as specific questions on a forum such as THP there is usually a Topic already started in the main section for you to get computer related questions answered but if you can't find one don't be afraid to just throw one in somewhere to get an answer. Someone will usually answer and a Moderator may move it to the area it belongs in.

Edit: also www.youtube.com is a great place to learn as there is a video out there for just about everything. Just type it in the search bar.

The biggest hurdle to overcome is the fear of trying. Social media sites are about following people and posting something about yourself. When you follow someone, you see what they are posting about themselves. When you post about yourself people that follow you will see the post. You can also make your account private or public which will limit who can see your posts. The main social media sites are facebook, instagram, and twitter. On facebook you post pictures or text as your status. On instagram it is a picture with a status. On twitter you get 140 characters to post a status and a picture.

On THP, find the link to your profile and you can create signature that shows up on your posts; most people list their clubs, or upload an avatar; which is simply a picture that you can get from your computer or somewhere on the internet.

A course probably isn't necessary, you should just create an account and start playing around.

As another aging person who has never been involved in the social media I must say this is good advice. I just keep plucking away and joining things like Instagram, Facebook, twitter.... I'm no expert but I'm learning. When I really get stuck, I go ask my grandchildren.... What can I say? They go so fast I have to slow them down or go over it twice but , as I said, I learning. Strangely enough, my biggest challenge at the moment is uploading pictures but with help and patience, I'll figure it out! Good Luck!
