Just like the title says. Do you consider golf a sport or a game?

For me I think it is a sport. With the way golfers train and practice now, and the money that is involved in the professional ranks and media coverage that it generates I definitely think it is more than a game and definitely a sport.

I think it is both.

A sport to those who take it seriously, who practice, who strive to get better.

A game to those who take it more casually.

Sport for most, game for me.

In my mind by associating it with the word "sport" makes the next word I add "competitive". For myself that equation comes out to "get serious, you must win". Goofy math in my demented mind, but I'm in it for fun, not win.

It can't be both?

There are lots of guys who treat it like a game, and lots of guys who make it a sport.

Not for this poll lol, no it definitely ca be, didn't think this through :beat-up:

I love the question... and I love the idea of people deciding how they want to treat it.

It's funny i'm listening to the us open telecast and the announcer has said sport multiple times and referencing DJ

But i was watching a movie last weekend and it was about the "game" of golf so it got me thinking what people think, but to your point i think it is both for a lot of people.

I voted "neither" to be difficult because I think it's actually both, or can actually be a combo of the two. :alien:

For me, it can definitely be a sport because it's played competitively, and can be played as a team. But to the same person, you can also play it as a game and go out and just have fun or play a scramble for some beers during other rounds.

I guess in the end....golf is just golf. And it's incredible.

For me it's a game. Not discounting the sport aspect of it, but by making it a game I can make it as serious or casual as I wAnt given the circumstances.

Definitely a game. IMO, anything you can do while smoking a cigar the entire duration of the activity is not a sport.

I think it is a sport because it requires physical interaction with equipment much like baseball, football...etc.!

If spelling is a sport, then golf most definitely is a sport.

A game to those who don't take it more casually.

Perfectly said. I was going to basically say the same thing but this is way better then how I would have said it.

To that argument, I think a lot of sports are considered 'games' as well. Hockey 'game' or mental 'game' is referred to many many times. And of course one of my favourite quotes, "Golf is a game that cannot be won, only played"

It's a combo but since that wasn't an option I went sport. A sport can be a game. Sports are competitive events involving athletics. Athletes come in all shapes and sizes.

I consider baseball, football, basketball games and sports.

Ditto

Basketball game, baseball game, football game ==> are all specific events of those sports
Golf game is a specific event of the sport of golf

I would say things like card games and casino games are games that are not sports.

I thinks its both and I don't think it has anything to do with how you treat it. Sport and game can be one in the same and I dont think it matters one bit. For some reason there seems to often be an ego thing when it comes to some people being told its not a sport and I don't know why they even care about that. Football and baseball are referred to as a football "game" or a baseball "game" yet they are sports. They are actualkly games too. What is fishing? Skeet shooting?

I think what we have in golf is a "sport game". Its certainly a game. A game imo is anything where one tries to beat another or even casually tries to score the best they can. Its also a sport because its an activity. Wouldn't "Darts" be a sport game? Golf imo is a level of skill. The skill of swinging the clubs is a physical and coordination task regardless of how intense or not it might be and also one which we keep a score to judge how well we did it. So therefore its a "sport game". Sort of like the term "Board game" for say playing monopoly....this is a "sport game". You "play" golf and that makes it a game and is one in which is a sport. Playing horse shoes is imo a sport game.

Its both.

People don't wear compression pants in games.

According to Misters Merriam and Webster, they define sport as: a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other.

So for me it's a sport.

Speak for yourself. Beags will sell you compression pants for any occasion.

Game.
You don't play sport of golf you play a game of golf.

Both all day

It's both, depending on the person

SPORT : a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other

GAME : a physical or mental activity or contest that has rules and that people do for pleasure
