After my luck in the casino during the SEC RR in Biloxi I would up with a couple free nights at the IP. I spent Thursday to Sunday in Gulf Shores on vacation with the family and was able to work it out to make the short trip to Biloxi for two nights on the end.

I played Soldiers Creek in Elberta, AL on Saturday morning with my girlfriend's dad and brothers in law. Not a whole lot to say about the course. It was the best deal we could find in the area with two of the guys having played a combined 4 rounds in the past 10 years. The tee boxes needed to be cut badly and fairways and greens were decent enough. There are several other courses closer to Gulf Shores I would recommend before it.

Me and my girlfriend left out from GS yesterday afternoon and had the pleasure of a 2 hour trip turned to 3 by traffic on I10. After getting settled in we had dinner at the Costa Cucina in the IP, which like the RR was fantastic. Today was mine and my gf's 3 year anniversary. I wanted to play golf and she wanted to hangout at the pool so we did both.

I called Shell Landing in Gautier, the site of the SEC RR last month that was plagued by rain and wet conditions. I had high hopes of getting to see the front 9 and share pics with the other 15 guys who have no idea what it looks like or if it really exists. That was quickly put to an end with the front 9 being closed once again. From some late night research when I couldn't sleep lastnight, the Grand Bear in Saucier, MS seemed to be the next best option.

Had a tee time for 10 this morning and pulled in with minutes to spare due to the course being further from the IP than I had anticipated and in the middle of nowhere.

The course is at the end of a 6 mile long twisting road that anything over 30mph is risky with multiple deer being seen in that stretch. I came to find out that the road goes through a national forest before arriving at the course and there isn't one single other road or building along the 6 mile stretch.

Once we arrived the employees were very polite and inviting and the beautiful clubhouse is immediately obvious. The clubhouse is adorned with multiple prints of Jack Nicklaus and various other players throughout the years being a JN designed course. The course has 5 sets of tees from Teddy Bear to Grizzly tipping out at 7200 yards. The starter recommended the brown bear tees at 6200 yards with the soft conditions. After playing the first 4 holes and hitting the ball decently I decided to drop back to the Golden bear tees at 6700 yards. This left me approaches from 130 yards to 200 plus on the par 4's depending on how much of the dogleg I was able to cut.

None of the holes are straight and there is trouble to be found off of the tee if not careful. I was hitting driver well, for me, but i'm not strong at working the ball both ways on command. This left me running though some of the fairways, but still with a decent shot to the green.

The tee boxes were level and cut short but sparse on some holes. There was still plenty of room for an adequate teeing spot. The fairways were soft but in great shape and the greens were excellent and rolled true. The greens did not have an extreme amount of undulation and followed the slopes of the surrounding areas. The bunkers were hard packed from rain but I'm not sure there's any courses in the area that could have decent sand right now.

I shot 40/44 and feel that I could go lower if I played again and hit driver as well as today. The course was extremely enjoyable and is one of my favorite courses I have played. The fairways were wide and the greens large but the doglegs and multiple bunkers made them appear much more intimidating. The course rewards good shots and isn't overly punishing. If I come back to biloxi I will be playing here again. This recap got a little long winded but this course and the staff deserve it and I don't have anything else to do sitting in this hotel room. I have included some pics from the round and wish I would have taken more.

PS: My casino luck is no more and Pumamax21 did not make an appearance on this trip to Biloxi.

I went to college in Hattiesburg, MS. I've played a lot of the tracks in South Mississippi, and the Grand Bear is one of my favorites, it's a shame that you didn't get to play it when it's firm and fast. It's a typical Nicklaus design where he gives you options and risk/reward type of decisions.

The best course down there is Fallen Oak. You can only get on if you are staying at the Beau Rivage. And the green fee is $200, but if you have a good night at the tables, that's no problem.

The Bridges is also a neat track, it's The Hollywood Casino's course. Glad you enjoyed yourself.
