Too large of a divot...hitting behind the ball

What are some practice tips for hitting my irons. When I swing I hit behind the ball and take a huge divot affecting the distance of my shot.
 
Sounds like you are very steep when you come down into the ball. Try swinging the club like a baseball bat above your waist to warm up so you feel more shallow or on a flatter plain. I do this with my wedges because I use take a beaver tail divot out it is very annoying. One other thing i have done is look directly in front of the ball when I swing towards the target. Just some tips that have helped me.
