Approaching Hole 10 -

Normally this little stone bridge is the only way to get across the creek on Hole 10, but for the PGA Championship, they put in a steel I-beam temporary bridge for all the heavy equipment. I wish I got a better shot contrasting the two.

Looking back at the 11 Tee box and the massive stands that are being constructed. These overlook the Number 17 Par 3, but are positioned in a way that you can see several holes from the stands.

Number 11 - The Sand Box. There are waste bunkers all over the place but in reality not many come into play. Also the waste bunkers are easy to hit out of. The only tricky part is having enough loft to get over the lip.

Number 11 Tee Box - My one bad snap hook on the day - 218 yards right into a pot bunker with a massive lip. I got out with no problem but didn't make it to the fairway and had to hit out of the thickest rough I've ever played. It was quite the scramble to make a Par!

Hole 12 is just a little, Rinky Dink Par 3 that I used a 58 to tee off with. Despite it's lack of length there is no where to miss - tall fescue to the left, water to the right and wasteland if you are short.

Hole 13 - This is actually a drivable Par 4 when the wind is in your favor because the fairway doglegs toward the water but there is nothing between the tee box and the water to prevent one from going for it if you can stick the green. Brett Favre actually drove the green a couple of weeks ago from the Blues (360+ yards). However, if you miss you are in big trouble. This shot is from the Pro tee box, which is 404 yards.

Its a phenomenal course, the day I went looked identical in terms of weather. Its hard to sometimes get a feel for how close this course is to the water, there are a few holes you could just sort walk down to the 'beach.'

Hole 14 - The typical way to play this hole is to hit into the fairway just to the left of the bunker out there. However, the caddie wanted me to go for the green since I hit it so long. There is a white stake out in the waste land that tells you where the green is as it's a total blind shot if you try and drive this par 4. I just came up short - another 10 yards and I would have been putting for eagle.

While waiting on 15, Dale walked me over the hill to take a look at the Irish course. It looks spectacular also allows carts, but does not have the views like the Straits.

Hole 15 - A view from the peak between the two courses. This is a monster of a Par 4 and Dale says bogie or better is a heck of a score. When the wind swirls, the pros even have a terrible time with it.

The Cart girl at hole 16. Since there are no cart paths, they drive 2 carts out on the course and basically become portable, stationary refreshment stations. On another note, the water coolers are a major PITA. Some jerk sued the course claiming he got sick from the water, so Kohler installed filtered water stations that are a big pain to use.

Nicely captured! This is one on the bucket list. One day I hope to cross it off.

Didn't realize Johnny Mojo caddied at Whistling Straits. I hope he treated you ok.

Great pictures. Played the Irish several times but only peeked at the straits over the top of the berms. See any sheep?

Hole 17 - Massive stands being constructed to overlook several holes on the Back 9. It was actually kind of a distraction because there was some extremely loud power tools being used. It was really the only "unpleasant" experience on the whole course.

Hole 18 from the tee box. This is a split fairway hole so you can play it one of two ways. Hit to the right and have about 180 into the green. If you are a long hitter, that is not the way to go since the fairway runs out and there is a massive unplayable drop down to a creek. For me, I'm too long of a hitter to go that rout. Or the better option if you can reach it is to hit over the wasteland on the left (260 yard carry) and let the ball roll down to about 80 yards of the green. Unfortunately for me, I cleared the wasteland with no problem, but I wasn't quite far enough left and it kicked right (left hand player with a draw) down into the creek. It was 300+ yards off the tee, but my next shot was unplayable since it wound up in the lateral hazard. Dale, my caddie said if it was 5-10 yards further to the right, I would have put it in the absolute perfect position.

Great pics, thanks for sharing. This is definitely on my bucket list.

Really enjoyed the pictures that you took. This course hasn't really appealed to me during either of the PGA Championships played there in the past, and I think the 18th is pretty silly, but it looks like you had a really great day there. How playable did you find the course? Having never been there, but just looking at all of the bunkers and the high grass around, it looks like it could lead to some pretty high scores for the regular amateur if that person wasn't on their game. But perhaps it's different if you play the correct set of tees, just was wondering how you found the course to play.

It is a very challenging course, but the fairways are pretty wide so if you pick the right tees, it's certainly playable. The waste bunkers are pretty easy to hit out of which are the majority of bunkers. The green side bunkers on the other hand are hard to hit out of because many have massive lips. The rough is thick and really grabs the club so it's best to stay out of it. I would actually rather hit out of a waste bunker than the rough. The tall fescue is a major PITA to hit out of if your ball is down.

Dale, the caddie, said that 75% of the people that play cannot even come close to breaking 100 and the majority insist on playing from the wrong tees. He loved caddying for me because I was a decent golfer and had the distance off the tee to really play shots that are optimal for the course.

The views and atmosphere alone is worth the price of admission, but you cannot go into it expecting to light the course on fire. Otherwise you will come away frustrated and disappointed.
