Figured I would post this as I’m a slower swinger which is usually tough to find reviews and testing covering mere mortal swing speed players (#NotAnInternetGolfer) lol
Thanks to Windmill Golf Center in Macedonia, OH, had the opportunity to hit my driver against some of the new 2017 models (TM M1, TM M2, Callaway Epic, Cobra F7, Titleist 917) on their Trackman system.
A little about me and my game:
40 yrs old, Game Golf has me at an 84.9 avg score, 11.0 cap, 221 avg drive counting all shots and 232 “typical” drive factoring out mishits.
From what I have seen over the years on various monitors, my driver swing speed is usually high 80’s low 90’s depending on time of season, temperature, etc. So essentially an Avg Joe short knocker with some but not a lot of ability ,lol.
Currently I game a Ping G 10.5* with Matrix Red Tie 65 (Cobra version). Plays at 43.5”. I’m only 5’4” so shorter works for me.
To do the most apples to apples comparison I have the same shaft “Red Tie mentioned above” with various tips at the same length.
The other clubs tested were the:
‘17 M1 10.5*
‘17 M2 12* (Tried the 10.5 last week and launched too low)
Epic 10.5*
F7 9-12*
917 10.5 (Stock Diamana S+) Don’t have a Red tie Titleist tipped.
I spent some time messing with the moveable weights and loft adapters, below are the best combinations I found for me.
Not a fitting per se as I didn’t try shafts outside of my Red Tie but did try and dial in what worked best for me.
All shots considered (sorted by carry)
Counting my best 3 shots (sorted by carry)
Some high level takeaways
Into the numbers…..
Accuracy - The most accurate shots were the shots that produced a Face to Path number closest to 0. The M1 and M2 seemed to produce the best numbers there. The G finished in 3[SUP]rd[/SUP].
Distance: While the M2 topped the charts in avg distance on all shots, the Epic led when factoring in only the top 3 shots. The G was 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] in both charts
Ball Speed – The Epic topped the charts. Not by a huge margin (<1mph) but noteworthy.
Swing Speed – The Epic produced the most swing speed - Perhaps the shape (much smaller profile than the Ping, Cobra and TM’s) contributed to this.
Hopefully somebody finds this info useful. I’m a number geek so this testing was a blast for me. It was also my first time ever on a Trackman.
Any questions or anything I left out just let me know.

Some high level takeaways
- I thought for sure my swing these days was in the 90’s. Humbling or perhaps not golfing since Nov, I’m rusty.
- A good swing is a good swing, a bad swing, well let’s just say no club will fix a bad swing
- I play a very strong grip and so my miss is a big sweeping smother hook that goes nowhere. So I am looking to try and mitigate that miss.
- I found that lofting up the Drivers, produced a lower launch (not higher) and even more of a hook. Lofting up just made my miss even worse. This is big find for me, as I try and launch the ball higher I always leave my driver in the + setting. While I don’t show it in the chart above, my driver set to + yielded a lunch of 11.0 and carries of 180 yds. In the neutral loft setting I showed launch of 13* and 205 carry. Less hooded smother hooks. If I had to pick a winner yesterday in terms of watching the ball flight it was the M2 12* lofted down. Matter of fact I want to go back and hit the M2 in 12* and the Epic in 13.5 both lofted down to see what happens with them
- The clubs (M1 and Epic) that have sliding weights, I hit them best in the full fade settings so I left them there.
