Anybody else into backpacking? I love to camp in general, but packing into untouched parts of the mountains is one of my favorite things to do.

Spent this weekend in the Pintlers, in SW Montana, with a bunch of kids from work. Not too bad of a gig getting paid for stuff like this!

Set up camp at Johnson Lake, elev. ~6000 ft

Next day did a day hike up to a saddle between 2 peaks along the continental divide, elev. ~8500 ft

From there, we took some of the kids up to the top of an unnamed peak, elev. ~9800 ft. The lake you can see is where we camped.

Love it! Fellow backpacker here. We were just talking about a trip with our kids this morning. The wife and I were serious backpackers pre-kids and have been introducing them into it the past few seasons. Some of my favorite troops ever were near your part of the country - Teton Crest Trail and assorted trails in Yellowsrone.

Nice! Backpacking Yellowstone and Glacier are both amazing. Going to take my son and daughter up in the Crazies in a few weeks. They're probably my favorite mountains in the state. Beartooths are tough to beat too. Then there's the Missions and Swans too I guess... #Montana

You need to clean out your messages btw!

I was planning on found a backpacking trip this weekend near Kebler pass outside of Crested Butts but fire restrictions here may put those plans on the back burner until having a campfire is ok again. I really dislike camping without a fire.

I grew up doing a lot of backpacking in the Boundry Waters Canoe Area of Minnesota and southern Canada. By the age of 20 I probably logged over 120 overnights canoeing/backpacking in the BWCA. We will soon be retiring for the summers in northern Minnesota and I can't wait to get back to at least 1 trip a year to the B.W.C.A.

Just bought a 3L water bladder on prime day, to replace my old one that broke. Remembered how much of a pain water bottles are this weekend.

Wish I had areas like that around me! Living in IL right outside Chicago, nothing like that around unfortunately....

Just went car camping this weekend, so nothing too crazy. Did drive the kids up to a little lake so they could swim and fish though. Love getting paid to camp!

Convinced my 13 yo daughter to go with me this weekend, and her pack showed up today. Getting really excited!

Was a great weekend, even with way too many people there.

I love me some day hiking (including long, difficult day hikes), but I've never done any overnight stuff. It's always sounded like a good time, but my fiance has zero interest in camping so it might be a tough sell.

Mind me asking, how do you get paid to camp? Do you work for the National Forest Service/Park Service/etc?

I work at a residential treatment facility for emotionally disturbed kids. One of the things we do to help facilitate relationships with them is taking them camping.

Just spent a week at Waterton National Park, Canada, it borders Glacier National Park in Montana. Logged 32km of hiking with my wife and daughter!
Such a beautiful area!

That's awesome. Reminds me of a pair of books I read (fiction) about a similar program, but with whitewater rafting. Seems like a great thing.

PS - If you're interested, the books were called Downriver and River Thunder.

I'll have to check those out. Lots of wilderness programs that use camping/rafting/etc as the core of their therapeutic model. For us it's just a small part of it all, but can definitely be powerful.

I'm somewhat familiar with it. Not sure what you mean by "looked into" though?

Went berry picking Sunday. Got 5 gallons of elderberries and about a half gallon of huckleberries. There were raspberries EVERYWHERE, but have those at home so, left them. Tiny mountain raspberries aren't worth the effort anyway.

Backpacking

It's been awhile but I used to be into backpacking regularly, now trying to get back into it. My wife isn't a huge fan but still have plenty of friends that are. Used to mostly go to the Sierras (because obviously), but have done trips in the desert and Big Sur coast as well.

Love seeing your guys pics and really cool to see jschiele01 with his daughter, awesome! My son is not born yet but I can't wait to take him to the woods. In a decade or so, my dream is to hike the John Muir Trail with my son.

I did a lot of backpacking/camping in your neck of the woods, so to speak. I've done several trips through the Sierras, too many to count, most for several days. My Yosemite trips were fantastic as well. My ultimate trip would have been the John Muir Trail though I've only done a piece of it. I've long since moved to Texas, haven't done any backpacking/camping here but we do hike wilderness trails regularly when its not too hot.

What do you guys recommend for hiking shoes or boots? I've tried Merrell, Salomon, Colombia and man my feet kill me after about 4 or 5 miles, they fit well and are great early on but man I can't find a pair that is painless.
