Cold Weather - No Golf - How Do You Cope?

Well last year, I played until the second week of November. I then hung out on THP. I didn't read too many 'rounds played' threads, since it made me insanely jealous. I did read several equipment threads. I would definitely travel to play, but it is difficult during the winter since my wife is a teacher. But she'd let me escape one weekend at least.

I guess I also focus on fitness. Honestly, last year was the first year I stayed engaged in golf. I used to just sort of cut out and use the winter to refresh myself. But last year, I mostly just went out and played golf every warmer day I could find, having played in January a couple of times.

ive found it kind of hard to follow it through THP during the months of January and February. It makes me want to golf, but i cant, and there is snow so it makes me hate snow and that turns into me pretty much just hating life for a couple months. I will usually try to get a handful of indoor sessions in especially in March so that when its time to hit the courses again im not spending the first month or two trying to shake the rust off. And again, yes i end up hating the world. Football helps, but then again come December and January my team is usually long out of anything important. I dont think i have a routine. i love fall and the holiday season because it brings joy to my boys and theres nothing more that i love than that, but the day after christmas until spring i pray i dont see a single snow flake. I would absolutely travel in the winter months and may plan to do so this winter after experiencing how easy it was to fly down to Florida to golf this summer.

Do you continue to follow it through places like THP and being active on the forum? Yes !
Do you just shut down and pick it back up when Spring time hits? No!
Do you hate the world and everybody around it? No...just old man winter.
Do you just go into football mode and pretend golf doesn't exist? Football mode yes, golf always exists.

What is your routine? I can driver about 100 miles south and play occasionally during the winter. Also play some indoor golf.
Are you happy with it? Better than nothing.
Would you travel in the winter to play if you could? Yes.

I live in NC. We don't have cold weather here.

Most places close around November here and don't open until April/May. Some will let you play as long as there's no snow on the ground, meaning maybe a round per month. Indoor hitting bays, virtual golf games, and THP are how I get through.

I try to stay active on THP, though admittedly it's harder without much of my own golf to talk about. I try to stay in good enough form hitting off a mat in my basement, but it's not usually enough to get me rolling into spring in top form. This year I've got a nice little adventure in California to help the winter go by quickly.

Do you continue to follow it through places like THP and being active on the forum? I didn't before, I was working 50+ hrs / wk and was too busy to think that often about golf.

Do you just shut down and pick it back up when Spring time hits? Fortunately, in the last 10 years of my working career I was able to get at least one golf vacation a year. Amazingly, before the fact ... thinking about the game and the swing produced pretty good results.

Do you hate the world and everybody around it? No ... it just made spring anticipation sweeter.

Do you just go into football mode and pretend golf doesn't exist? Football mode yes, but December is so busy you don't notice the void, and the PGA starts in Hawaii shortly after the new year.

What is your routine? none

Would you travel in the winter to play if you could? Yes, I did.

Now in Pawleys Island, SC - I certainly don't miss snowflakes from
November - March!

Fortunately I don't have to cope. With the exception of maybe a handful of days in the year, golf is always an option. Much harder game for me in the winter though.

Ha! I Love winter. I teach snowboarding part time in the winter so it's all about the pow pow in the wintertime.

I'll try to still get out as long as it's not pouring rain or snow. Otherwise I practice in the garage a lot. I used to have a covered range I went to, but now I'm going to have to figure out what I'm going to do with the recent move.

I'm becoming a spring and fall golfer in spite of my burning desire to play all year, the summers are way too hot with the lungs in their current state and the winter is just not fun because of the multi layers of clothing to stay warm. I get hot and heavy on THP in the winter as it's my only real access to golf and golf porn, other sports don't really get me going with the same passion so I will wait patiently

I will go south for a few times in the winter for some golf though.

I do mind cold weather cold much prefer it to wet weather.

Practice in the golf dome, on my birdieball green, and playing if there's no snow on the ground. Sometimes we'll call courses south of us and see how far we need to go to find an open course. It's not unusual for us to drive 3-4 hours. Then we just pray for spring.

There are things to do in the snow here, but if there isn't snow on the ground I will play. Someone said something about not playing in low 60s as soft, I'll play in the 30s and 40s if the course is open.

My parents have a place in St. George about 4 hours south and it is usually at least in the 50s so I play a lot down there when there is too much snow up here to play.

The courses here are open 364 days each year but hopefully the mountains 70 miles away will get their normal 500 inches of snow this winter and I can forget about golf for 4 months!

I dont think i could handle that. We have wet days in winter but no snow that prevents us from playing.

Living in mid Sweden we got not so nice winters from a golf perspective. I am quite new to the game, but my previous winter (and I suppose it will be similar next winter) I went to an indoor simulator every second week together with a couple of friends. Apart from that I am definatelly following THP-forum as well as checking youtube videos. I like course V-logs. I also tend to play and create more music in my studio during the cold months (I am semi professional musician) and do some skiing/snowboarding with the kids.
I also try to get some overtime done at work during the cold and dark months to have some time for extra vacation during the summer

I've always lived where there is winter so I guess I'm accustomed to it by now. I love playing golf, but when it gets cold and I can't, I don't feel any sort of void. My gear gets put away inside from October to March and I usually don't touch it until Easter weekend. I might bring the putter in to play around on the carpet, but that's it. I'm not one who will go to some indoor place or get out on those few days when it is sunny and warm.

I think of it as shutting down. To me there isn't much point in going out in early January on a nice 60º day. I haven't touched a club in a few months, so I will suck. Then paying money to do it, only to have to shut down again for another couple of months. If I don't have to pay, sure, I'll go out and mess around if the weather is nice, but I will not pay for it.

The winter months definitely hurt the mental status related to golf. The recent finishing of my man cave area with the addition of a hitting and putting area will help with that craving. SIM golf definitely doesn't equate to the real thing, but what can one do. Luckily we tend to vacation a lot in the winter months to warm places, which means the club's get some flyer miles. THPing in the winter allows to stay current on all activities golf related!

I read a lot anyway, but in the Winter it really blooms. I'll read at least 2-3 books a week during the Winter months. I'll also go play if the weather is not below 30 and there is no wind.

I play when I can - in Colorado it's not that uncommon to have decent playing days during the winter. When I can't play, I do other stuff. After 40 years of living with golf withdrawals during winter, I don't find it a problem. I don't live, breathe and eat golf - I love the game and I love to play, but I also need time away from it to recharge. Winter provides that without having to make a conscious decision.

I take a couple days off and do some stuff around the house.

I can play year round provided I don't mind getting cold and wet, which I don't.
Still, the shorter days in the winter mean I spend less time on the course and more time playing indoor/sim golf, video game golf, watch Hockey/Football etc.

My main golf activity to tide me over is usually demo-ing new gear and tinkering/buying new gear.

I shutdown during the winter months and pick it back up in the Spring. It sucks and usually why the slow starts in April/May make it challenging to motivate myself to continue practicing and grind it out.
