Garmin Golf, who prior to today was considered a competitor in the low-price home simulator market, is announcing the release of their new Approach R50 Launch Monitor. The Approach R50 signals a substantial change for the company based on its price alone. This full-feature launch monitor is packed with a boatload of high-end features that should appeal to many advanced launch monitor and simulator golf enthusiasts.
At a $4,999 base price, the Garmin Approach R50 is joining a very competitive segment of the home-simulator market. However, it does have one unique feature to set it apart from others – a 10” built-in color touchscreen that can be used for both launch monitor readings or simulator golf. Let’s take a look at the rest of the R50’s feature set.
High-Speed Cameras
- Fine-tune your form with a 3-camera system that captures precision metrics and slow-motion impact videos.
Ball and Club Metrics
- Use advanced measurements to dial in your swing, including ball speed, launch angle, face to path as well as improved spin rate and axis both indoors and outside (club tracking stickers required).
43,000+ Courses
- Play virtual rounds — including putting — with up to four players with the Home Tee Hero on the Garmin Golf™ App (subscription required).
Training Mode
- Understand every part of your game with training mode, which tracks stats for each club and shows a shot dispersion chart based on an advanced ball flight trajectory model.
Versatile Display and Portability
- Protective case included, and four hours of battery life means you can use the R50 away from home. The virtual course can be projected on a screen, while the built-in display on Approach® R50 shows the ball and club metrics you care about most.
Those of you familiar with Garmin’s Approach R10 should have immediately noticed the Approach R50 is a far more advanced looking launch monitor. With the included club stickers and a 3 camera system, it should be quite accurate for both club and ball data. While Garmin did not provide a full list, they are saying that the R50 will provide 15 different club and ball metrics.
The Approach R50 will provides game improvement features in its Training Mode by saving sessions and statistics for each club in the bag so that progress can be tracked over time. In addition to the shot-to-shot numbers and visual ball flight representation, the color touchscreen display can also show high speed videos of each shot, allowing the user to get a full picture of what their club is doing at impact.
The Approach R50 may be the first high-end launch monitor that provides users a one-stop solution for simulator golf. Using Garmin’s Home Tee Hero application (subscription required), it’s possible to play sim rounds on the R50 itself without using any external screens. For those users that would like to have a larger view, it can be connected to any projector or monitor via HDMI. In addition, users can customize views. For example, the simulator golf round can be viewed on a projector screen while all the shot-by-shot stats can be viewed on the R50’s screen.
Garmin is saying they’ve improved on the Home Tee Hero app for use with the R50. Though we haven’t had a chance to see these changes for ourselves, this would be a welcome improvement as the earlier versions of Home Tee Hero weren’t really competitive when it came to realistic simulator golf. It was nice to have access to the 43,000+ courses in the Garmin library, but the gameplay lacked things like elevation changes and the immersive environments that are expected in modern sim golf applications. If Garmin has made substantial improvements, HTH could be a viable option for use at home. Regardless, the Approach R50 does offer WiFi connectivity and will be compatible with 3rd party simulation software like GS Pro, E6 Connect, and Awesome Golf.
Details
- $4999.99 – some additional features may require subscription
- Available now at www.garmin.com

That is one of the reasons that the SKT+ is appealing. No fiduciaries required for club data, the only metric missing is angle of attack – otherwise, it is highly accurate.
I’m really surprised that no other manufacturer has followed use with both camera and radar, it seems so obvious and the lidar component is inexpensive.

The reason for this is because the camera sees a lot of the club and as it’s moving through the hitting area fairly quickly tracking something that isn’t an easily defined point like a sticker is difficult.
Skytrak+ measures club head speed only and uses AI calculations to get the other metrics. So not one in the same as other launch monitors, even if they’re very close.
Skytrak has said it themselves that AoA is very difficult to capture and won’t release it until they can get consistent measurements swing to swing.

I’m am a big fan of AI in the golf space as a whole. I think most would agree that $5k LM, using AI calculations, is reasonable for the target audience and most amateur golfers. I really look forward to a LM that combines better cameras with the lidar. While I mention SKT+ (full disclosure, I own one), I think a company that releases a better camera based system with the lidar – along with reasonable software, will have a winning product with longevity. I imagine it would be easy for Foresight as the lidar tech is easier to work with and less costly.

I don’t think you’re far off here with a LM that’s $5k+ could and probably should use some form of AI to assist with measurements. Yes the golfers who are looking for or needing finite detail measurements are already spending more on a LM than $5k 😉
I think ST+ does a very good job without the club markers on its club data, but there will always be people out there that will flag it as “calculated” metrics and not trust the numbers.

I’m leaning towards Skytrak+ for my outdoor setup. Been doing a lot of research. Apparently it’s more geared towards indoors but I think it’ll be fine.

As long as it’s off a mat and not grass
Yeah I read about that. Kinda sucks when I want to go to the range with it but at home it’s a mat.
Would have gone with mevo but I’d rather something that goes alongside not behind.

At the Golftec experience Nick Cross one of the lead instructors at Golftec talked about the outdoor limitations on the st+. Using outside the sun can’t be shining directly into the cameras because it prevents the camera from seeing the ball. The problem with hitting off of grass is any divot is going to obstruct the camera’s view. The gc quad with 4 cameras it can compensate for the debris in the air because at least 2 or 3 of the 4 cameras will have a view of the ball.

Yeah but $15k is out of my price range lol
MLM pro and mevo go down the line
BLP has ridiculous subscription fee
Skytrak+ seems to be the middle ground

You’d think the doplar radar would make up that difference

I can say as a person that owns both a GCQuad and a SkyTrak+, I havent powered on my GCQuad indoors in close to 6 months. Still use it for our THP Experiences where fittings are involved, but outside of that, I use the SkyTrak+ because the software is so good.

For outdoor use you just need to know the limitations. I’ve been using the ST+ for all my practice sessions at Golftec and it is a fantastic unit and the software is easy to use.

And somehow the BLP + subscription is a good deal compared to the GC3. The break even on the GC3 is 9 years if you want club and ball data.

Don’t know. But as a software developer I can say it’s a lot cheaper to call it a misread than to significantly rewrite the software to fall back to radar data and have users complain that a bunch of stats aren’t showing up because the radar data can’t infer them.

I use skytrak at GOLFTEC and I love it. But of course it’s indoors. I’m really hoping it will hold up outdoors.

yes
FWIW, I’ve used the SKT+ outdoors on mats just fine, both covered and uncovered ranges.

great to hear, I’m really wavering back and forth between the SKT+ and the R50. I probably wont play outdoors over the winter so I think I have a couple months to decide. Kind of want to take advantage of black friday deals, but buying a launch monitor and having it sit for 5 months doesn’t seem to make much sense, especially warranty-wise.

Yeah that’s pretty ideal for me lol.
If you choose SKT+, I suggest bidding on it from their official ebay store – they auction one weekly and average $2000.

Nothing like THP Experiences anywhere
