Ladies Cobra Baffler Rail Fairway Wood

With the LPGA Tour Championship just coming to an end I am really excited to have this review for our female readers. We have done quite a few iron set reviews recently but we have yet to do anything on a fairway woods so this review is well overdue. Over the past few months I have been lucky enough to try out the Cobra Baffler Rail F 5 wood and I will come right out and say it is fantastic!

I have struggled for a long time to find a wood that I felt comfortable hitting and that could fill the gap in my bag between my 4 iron and 3 wood. I am not the longest hitter out there so there have been many times where I was in between clubs on a lengthy par 3. From set up to follow through I was beyond please with the Cobra Baffler Rail F.

From the Company
Cobra’s Baffler Rail Fairway features a sleek-looking, 17-4 steel clubhead that has a thin, high-strength 465 maraging steel clubface designed to increase ball speed and distance. The elongated clubface and low-profile head result in a low, deep center of gravity – to help golfers launch the ball with ease – and a high Moment of Inertia for maximum forgiveness. The new four-way rail sole is designed to help the club move effortlessly through turf – to provide more consistent ball contact and improved control. The Baffler Rail Fairway features a premium, high-performance Fujikura Motore shaft for optimum distance and control.

Technology
Oversize Design with Shallow Face – A new, unique oversized head design and a very shallow face results in an extremely forgiving fairway wood that launches the ball with ease.
Innovative Rail Sole – A four-way rail sole reduces the area of the club that comes in contact with the ground. the result is improved turf interaction and maximum forgiveness – making the Baffler Rail Fairway the most forgiving and versatile Cobra fairway ever.

High Strength Steel Face with 9 Point Face Technology – A thin, lightweight maraging steel face promotes faster ball speed and allows for 10 percent of the weight to be strategically repositioned low and back for improved launch characteristics and an expanded sweet zone.

Looks
In the past I have been drawn to clubs, specifically irons, with colorful shafts and club heads. That is not what you will find with the Cobra Baffler Rail and oddly enough I really like it! It’s a very simple and understated club with a pearl white shaft, solid black crown, and minimal writing on the sole. This club won’t be staring in a beauty pageant anytime soon but it still has a sleek, clean look to it and I found it rather pleasing to the eye. The signature Cobra snake is placed right on the crown as an alignment aid and it’s all you need for a perfect set up. When I brought this club to the range for some testing with other ladies most shared the same sentiments that I did regarding the fresh appearance of this club.

Range Testing
I have made no attempt to hide the fact that I am still a fairly new golfer who is working diligently to perfect her swing and lower her scores. With that said, I openly admit that I have often struggled to hit woods off the deck. I think it’s a mental block I have but more times than not when I attempt this I end up topping the ball. However, with the Cobra Baffler Rail this problem does not exist. The club glides gracefully through the air making solid contact with the ball and away it flies. Range session after range session I was having tremendous success striking this club and with each shot I could feel my confidence swell.

Since I am a high handicap golfer I feel it’s imperative to have ladies of all skill levels test the equipment to get their feedback based on their level of experience. During our testing on the range we were able to have 6-10 golfers try the new Baffler Rail and almost unanimously came away impressed.  The feedback given was that while most FW woods right now are getting bigger and deeper, the low profile and shallow design really helped players hit it off the deck.  The lower indexed golfers frequently remarked that hitting this one was as easy as hitting an iron or hybrid due to this shallow design.  This was something unexpected, but remarkable to have without having to sacrifice performance or playability.

The sound and feel of the Rail was designed perfectly in my opinion.  Speaking with the golfers on the range, the majority spoke about the pleasant “ting” off the club face combined with a nice smooth feel at impact.  This is in part due to how well the shaft works with this club head and the results showed the details.  Long and straight both off of the tee as well as from the short grass left players craving more from the 2010 offering from Cobra.

Course Testing
I took this club out on the course for over a dozen rounds and I can say with full confidence that it has now found a very comfortable home in my bag. It was a clutch club on long, which for me would be 130+, par 3s as well as a staple on par 5s. I cannot express how excited I am that I do not have to fear hitting a fairway wood off the deck. This has hindered me from many par and birdie chances on par 5s in the past.

One thing I would like to mention that I didn’t mention above is the sound. This was one of my biggest fears when I first got this club for testing because I have hit Cobra drivers in the past and I couldn’t handle that ‘baseball bat’ sound it made. I feared this fairway wood would have a similar sound but it was nothing like that at all. And as mentioned above many of the other ladies commented on the “ting” that it made and how they didn’t mind, or dare I say even liked, it.

Overall
Going into the this review I was extremely apprehensive about testing this club and was sure I was going to hate it just like I have hated all other fairway woods. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to hit the Cobra Baffler Rail. I never thought I would see the day when I would have fairway woods in my bag but alas now I do. If you are have feared the woods like I have, or are in the market for a new fairway wood or simply trying to bridge a gap in your bag I would highly recommend giving this club a try. You can learn more about the Cobra Baffler Rain Fairway wood as well as the entire Cobra Golf line at their website HERE.

UPDATE:
I have been playing this club for a while now and every time I take it out to the range or the course I fall in love with it even more. If you are a golfer who is worried about hitting their fairway woods I would strongly recommend giving this club a try. It really is the easiest club I have ever hit! I have even found it easier to hit then my long irons.
