Part 2
My trip was uneventful and got to Evansville with a stiff body from driving that long and far. Hotel sleep and then it was time!
Our first day, I planned to pick up @V14_Heels from the Evansville airport. The only place I have seen a smaller airport has been on some Caribbean islands. What I did see when I got to the airport was that the area had received plenty of rain and you could about get lost in the grass out front. Lush doesn’t begin to describe it.
Inside, I bumped into none other than Mr. Spittin Shirley’s himself, @Templet0n. After sleeping in airports and coming in from Reno he was nice to a random guy like me that just walked up and began to start talking to him. We small talked about the experience and THP. V14_Heels plane came in and we were off leaving Templet0n to be picked up by the one and only @Hawk
V14_Heels and I bumped around Evansville and Newburgh burning time before heading to Victoria National. We arrived a bit early at the gate where we met jordiee who had just driven in from Ann Arbor. But I quickly learned he’s no Michigan man, he pulls for the Spartans.
Time came, we entered the gate, and the word that comes to mind about the facility, grounds, staff, course, and service from that point on is ELITE.
We arrived at the front of the clubhouse where we met @JB and the club staff who were so welcoming. Our clubs were put on carts and we headed to the range for our fittings. Spittin Shirley’s were already banging away on the range and seeing Templet0n mash a ball is insane in person.
We met @DannyLe and he was actively fitting the other guys. Watching him swap heads and shafts, make adjustments to the future fit adapters, and dial in just the right setup for each of us was something I won’t forget. He was encouraging and technical, while being intentional and making recommendations. Tweaking things here and there, but using the swing each of us brought to the event and marrying that swing with state of the art golf technology to bring about shaft/head combo that just flat out worked for each of us.
I hit the range and started to try to get warm and loosened up. The stiffness of the drive was still very apparent. I have come to realize I also have a complex, all mental, in hitting in close proximity to objects and it was rear-ring its ugly head in the range. Like I can’t hit in the practice bays at a big box store because I think I am going to hit the computer for the next bay beside me when I swing. The combo of these thoughts in my head and stiffness led to me not bringing much to the table on fitting day. I also have never had a lesson or fitting and that played into my nerves. But, when my fitting time came DannyLe had the patience of JOB with me. I don’t think I could feel my hands and was nervous because I have been swinging really well and then show up and can’t hit a ball. It was like I had an expectation that he had expectations of me. The same probably couldn’t have been further from the truth. He was there to fit me into the best combo possible. I believe my first swing was a snap hook and my second I hit the ground 6 inches behind the ball. Hadn’t done that in years and did it twice in about 10 swings. I hit balls during the beginning of that fitting like I had never swung a club before. Finally, I calmed down, still didn’t have much of a swing, but DannyLe , ever the encourager, continued to plant positive seeds and make recommendations and tweaks. He and JB continued to analyze the horror show they were witnessing but didn’t let it get them dismayed. Well, at least they didn’t say to me just quit, you suck. I kept mixing my current gamer in to try and get some familiarity. DannyLe put together a combo and I hit it a bit and he said, I think that’s the one. I turned to hand it to him, and he said, “It’s yours.” In that moment, I felt like Harry Potter when he received his wand after being fit at Ollivanders. I may have floated away from Danny and JB after that moment.
We all left the range and toured the facility and our cottage. Pro shop damage was done. The cottage was probably one of the nicest facilities I’ve ever stayed in. UST Mamiya provided us with a generous abundance of SWG.
Everyone had arrived except my pards, Paulsack. We putted around the putting green and played a skins game while we waited, and he finally arrived. He went straight to range and got fit.
Dinner was in the clubhouse private room. The spread was amazing. Ribs were easily the best I have ever eaten. Listening to DannyLe and JB talk about products and how they are made, industry, and THP is fascinating. The forum and the guys around the table also had great questions. I don’t talk much in those type of settings. Like I said previously, I’m taking it all in.
This is where we learned about Jordiee’s putter and that it was his second super expensive LAB. To be fair, I think he rolled it quite well. I can’t say anything, at one time I owned 3 LAB putters, not customs, but none were cheap.
Sitting at dinner, then later, playing games and talking around the cottage, it is incredible how THP and golf can bring together 8 people from California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia who for the most part don’t know one another, to fellowship around an experience. THP provides a great avenue to build relationships around a common interest, golf. I know V14_Heels and I hope to play again one day since he’s just a few hours away.
…
Part 3
First day of completion started with breakfast which was amazing. With the spread at breakfast, if you don’t leave fat and sassy, it’s your own fault. Range session was decent. We hit the course in a drizzle and met our caddie Andrew(I think I remember that right) Forecaddies keep you from running out of balls on this course in the first few holes. It was easy to lose a ball in the second cut and you could just about forget about it in the native stuff without them. Paulsack and I knew we were big underdogs. We had already had the conversations about lost balls the night before in the cottage where JB asked how many I brought and said I was going to lose at least 9 in our match against he and DannyLe. Challenge accepted. Victoria National was pretty long playing at the distance we played it compared to sub 6000 I usually play. Approach shots were going to be longer than I was used to. Contrary to fitting day, I actually hit the driver really well usually keeping it in play and even hitting the fairway some. While the driver was working, it took a few holes for me to get settled in and find closer to the center on other clubs. I was wearing the toe out for a while. Paulsack was right there to keep us in it as I was working things out. We ham and egged it pretty well. Swing lube in the form of High Noon at the turn might have helped calm the nerves. I had a few golf shots through the round I will remember forever. I played really well through the gauntlet hitting the green on 14, and sticking it close on 16 and 17.
JB and DannyLe won the match, but I felt Paulsack and I played about as well as we could. JB and DannyLe are a great team and know each others game well. Enjoyed when we were close to them to be able to listen to them breaking down game and shots as they played. BASS(sounds like base) was born during round one when JB asked is it Bass like fishing, bass like thumping a guitar or music thumping). Of course it’s bass like fishing and that’s what I said, which he replied ok bass(sounds like base) and in that moment was born bassfan(sounds like basefan). It’s a moniker I have used when I first joined THP and was on mostly fishing forums before that. No one has ever actually called me by it in person, so for someone to do so, then it get changed is even more hilarious to me. Ace of Base also came up as a possibility for my handle during round 1 and me being a fan. I know “The Sign” by Ace of Base and started singing it on course. JB said it was a little more southern than he remembered ??
A break for lunch and probably the best wings I have ever eaten. Do you see the trend with the food? I’m sure it is the same across Dormie Network, but man Victoria National food was incredible.
Quick trip to the range and it was back out on the course for Match 2. No caddies this time, so you better be watching that ball and where it goes. We had the pleasure of playing with Spitting Shirley’s. They are just great guys and I would play with them all them time if I could. The only real problem with playing them was when Templet0n found the fairway, he was an easy 90-100 yards ahead of us. And the times he didn’t, there was Hawk to put them in the middle of the fairway. I got to say Hawk has an incredible short game. Spittin Shirley’s righted their ship after their first match and took the match with us pretty handily.
Bonus golf was discussed and attempted, but a really nasty thunderstorm system rolled in and we didn’t even get to play one hole extra. More fellowship around the cottage while it poured rain. A beautiful rainbow came and with it an excellent dinner of surf and turf. JB didn’t eat his steak to save room for cheesecake, so the carnivore in me took one for the team as you all saw. More shat talk, tech talk, industry talk, forum talk occurred as we also revisited our rounds from earlier in the day. We discussed how our new setups were working for us. More chilling out, games, and beverages. Rambo was even on, so what could be better? Super Hawk may have made an appearance. DannyLe was like family being the life of the party and making sure everyone was engaged as well as having a great time. What a host. JB was pulled away to do work stuff…boo, but someone has to make sure THP is here for us right?! We turned in early knowing the sun had set on our last evening at this experience. Went ahead and packed most of my stuff in my car just so the morning wouldn’t be so chaotic.
…
Part 4
Final day started with waking early eager with anticipation. Dressed and ready with plenty of time to catch sunrise and some amazing views with photos of the world and Victoria National waking up. Breakfast and range were both pretty quick as we were first off at 800. I leaned into the Bassfan new moniker from the day before and Paulsack and I rolled up to the first tee blasting The Sign by Ace of Base through the cart speaker. It was time to get the round going. We were group 2 thankfully and Hawk was able to get his drone up and do some content. Can’t wait to see all that in the future. I promptly hooked my first drive into the short game practice area left, after I had hit ever drive on the range well just previously. Paulsack found the hay so off to the short game area we went. It was back and forth with the Shirley’s on the front 9. Templet0n found his groove and smashed some bombs. It’s insane when he hits a 5 iron 40 yards further than I hit a 5w. It can get in your head if you let it, but I just kept plugging along. I told him multiple times, they could easily put a Walmart between our drives. Paulsack and I kept grinding and were down one at the end of 9. We turned to the back and got it back all square. I think we just kind of ran out of gas and the Shirley’s stayed in their groove and put their foot on the gas. They closed us out 4/3 and then with the pressure of trying to catch up gone, we started playing better. What do you call that? Golf. A four letter word for a reason. We closed out our round watching Templeton go for the green on 18 and get up by the green ? on a direct line. My regret as I was watching and not filming.
Back to the clubhouse for lunch and of course it was the best wings I’ve ever eaten again obviously. There was no need to even see the menu. JB had to hit the road and take DannyLe to the airport so it was bittersweet goodbyes to those guys. Hawk and Jordiee both decided to head on out as well which left just me and the three who were flying out Saturday. There were discussions of bonus golf but we all got pretty tight and decided to not have to go play adventure golf in the native hay. It was decided to go to the range and putt, which allowed me to decide to point my ride East and head home to the fam. One more trip to the pro shop and I was ready to get going. I needed to get V14_heels signature on my flag and I texted him at the range. He asked if I’d just take him on to his hotel which I was happy to do. Exiting the gate at Victoria National, tied a bow on a whirlwind trip with UST Mamiya and THP at ShaftUp #1. Got V14_heels to his destination then burned 700 miles up getting back to NC. Rolled in the driveway at 3am and crashed.
Coming into the experience, I knew my assignment, post, post, post, and bring THP along for the ride. On the course, I feel like maybe I missed the opportunity to soak in a few moments, but it also didn’t allow me to dwell on a bad shot because I was trying to post the next thing or the next score. That probably actually helped me as sometimes I am prone to dwell on the negative, even though I am generally a positive person. Even with all the pops, I knew to have a shot, I would have to play probably the best golf of my life and I just didn’t do that. Like I said Paulsack and I Ham and Egged our way around. He hit good shots and scored on holes when I didn’t and vice versa.
Best thing I bought on the trip was the flag to commemorate the event. Shirts and hats will get worn and worn out, and ball markers will get lost, but the flag I got and had everyone sign will be kept and be a trigger to flash me back to Victoria National. I would encourage others to do the same in the future.
I would like to say to those who were participants with me, you are always welcome at my place if you ever come to NC. I would love to play golf with you again any day.
To DannyLe, thank you, thank you, for your generous fun spirit and wisdom for fitting ANY golf swing. I am pumped to get this red 7s proto to work with the ds adapt x 10.5 head and see what gains and improvements come to my driver game. I swapped out the grip(midsize guy here) yesterday and can already tell Danny picked the right setup for me, I just needed a bigger grip. Thank you for the awesome SWG.
Thank you a well to UST Mamiya for you finding value in letting all levels of golfers review and test your equipment. I hope we review these shafts in the coming days, weeks, and months while showing THP what awesome products will be coming to market soon. I can already see a difference over my past gamer and I can’t wait to get some round/use data that I can share with THP.
Last but definitely not least, thank you JB. You are a fantastic host who runs a great forum for degenerate golf lovers like us. You and DannyLe both treated us like family on this trip. You can keep my Ace of Base CD. I already ordered another. They don’t even sell them in stores anymore. Had to get it on the bay.

JB your humor, snark, and chirps kept me rolling. I hope to have an opportunity to witness and experience it again in person one day. We’ll always have a memory of _?_?…?
If anyone actually read all of this, I want to tell you, THP experiences are real and they might just be the time of your life if you get selected to go. If it works with your schedule, and you are interested in the products, sign up. You might get as lucky as I was, and be selected to go on a trip of a lifetime.
Stay tuned THP because we’re going to let you all know just how good these UST Mamiya Protos really are.
@BASSFAN07 it was a pleasure to relive the trip reading those posts. Loved every word of it.
I hope we cross paths again.
And man did you drive the ball well on the course.
Well done with the recaps @BASSFAN07
I had a similar feeling on the range, thinking JB And Danny probably thought I was hopeless. But those two want nothing more than for you to get better. It’s a pretty cool feeling to have them in your corner rooting for you.
Can’t wait to see how well the new stick works for you this year.
Now that’s a write up @BASSFAN07

It’s always awesome to see what a great time THPers have together and how everyone looks out for the newbies. There’s something to be said for a fitter who can make people feel comfortable in their own skin, kudos to you @DannyLe !

Great recap of the experience! You did a great job bringing us all along and did a terrific job with the score updates along the way. No doubt the proto and new set up Danny got you into will transform your tee game this year.

We genuinely do.
There are people that there is no changing, and that’s fine, but I have yet to see a golfer not get better after Shaft Up fitting.
I have also seen many a golfer know everything and immediately move on and make changes. To those people, Shaft Up is probably not for them.
I still remember you guys telling me how close I am. And I can still hear Danny telling me just let it go and swing hard, get through the ball. And there are times I forget all of that. Funny how the swing is constantly a work in progress. But it’s pretty cool I have that knowledge and the tools to be better. Now it’s on me to find the consistency.
When it clicks I can see some really good things happen on the course.

This is a such a great recap!
Fat and sassy will live in my head anytime there’s a great breakfast in front of me!
Great recaps @BASSFAN07, enjoyed reading them! It’s always fun to see the event through the participants’ eyes after they’ve had the time to sit back and gather their thoughts afterwards. You guys brought the Experience to the forum very well, but in the process of balancing posting with being present and engaged in the Experience itself there are always some details that don’t get posted and it’s fun to hear about them afterwards.

I’m honestly surprised it turned into what it was.
Me saying “i’m gunna make you putt that no matter what if a points on the line”.. I was talking **** after a frustrating hole after multiple reasons that are not worth getting into here.
I don’t think anyone who spent the weekend with me would think I would actually make @JB putt a 12 inch out ?. But we did briefly meet before getting into a competitive match so I can’t make that assumption next time.
On a side note. I play 95% of my golf with my brother and we putt everything out because we are not good enough for gimmies….
So I can honestly say that is the first time in a match I even had to think of what my threshold for a gimmies is. For @JB and @DannyLe it probably should have been bigger then the distance in my head given the experience would not have happened if not for those two.
Lessons learned, ended up being a fun match I was hoping would come down to 18, but then @DannyLe smoked a dagger of a putt to close it out!
Was a great day with beautiful weather on an unbelievable course!
I’ve kind of always been of the belief that if you miss it, it’s just proof it wasn’t a gimme?

Enjoyed your recap. Thanks for putting it all down for us and I’m so glad your fitting worked out well
I want to talk about the fitting aspect of this and the gains, because I feel like there are 1) some misconceptions and 2) maybe even some undertones of skepticism from people.
@DannyLe would be the first person to tell you that popping in a UST Mamiya shaft alone isn’t going to gain you 20 yards. He’d probably also tell you that a WHOLE BUNCH of you are playing the wrong setup and it’s impacting your distance and your dispersion. Hell, even me that has all this knowledge, experience, and access to gear was playing something very poorly matched to my needs off the tee.
The shaft plays a part. The head plays a part. We play a part. Regarding the latter, I was impressed to see that these fittings aren’t lessons in disguise. There were some talks about approach and alignment, and maybe a “swing aggressively here”, but we were fit for the swing we brought and given the opportunity to maximize what we get out of it.
33 yards wasn’t an embellishment. If anything, it was hard for me to even put that number in writing, because of just how bad my results were with my old setup. Like ego-bruising bad.

This is similar to what I thought when I was at Hidden Creek with him. I “Thought” I came in with a set up that was helping me the best and quickly realized all my THP wisdom was not being directed properly. My fitting didn’t gain me what you saw, but it was enough to put one less club and sometimes two, in my hand for approach shots. That is big for my game.

Yea, do what you’d normally do for sure, but when it comes time to do your fitting, just swing like you swing and let the fitting come to you. It will happen.
Busy end to the work week and a busy weekend has had me playing catchup when I could. I wish I could have followed this one live. Shaft Up always brings the heat and this one was no different! Incredible gains for the participants, awesome swag, amazing looking food, pro shop hauls, and some fun matches. I’m just amazed following these and seeing the gains that participants get. Danny Le just knows how to get the most out of someone’s swing and it’s so much fun to see the results.
Congrats to Team Jewamese @JB and @DannyLe on the win! Thanks to all the participants @Hawk @Templet0n @V14_Heels @jordiee @BASSFAN07 @Paulsack for all the updates, photos, videos, and answering so many questions. It was a great follow and I look forward to hearing about how the new drivers perform on your home course!
I can’t really devote the time to a big recap. Just trying to hold it all together here as I get caught up on multiple fronts. That being said, I do want to say a few things.
@JB and @DannyLe are my homies. Both guys are incredibly generous and invested in making sure these things end up being better than imagined. I just don’t think people will ever get the time, effort, and expense that goes into making these things happen. We make dreams so real that people forget what dreams even are. I’ll never forget it and appreciate it every day.
Like always, I tried to connect with everybody that came to this thing and I hope each of you came away feeling like I was successful there. I absolutely love spending time with THP’rs and being part one of the coolest few days of your lives. I am unapologetically me and hope that left you with a somewhat good memory to take with you ? Thanks for being part of one of my life’s great memories too. You all are awesome in your own ways and I appreciate you.

These are such a great time to follow along with and the Shaft Up crew absolutely crushed it. I’ve only been here a short bit of time, but it seems like more than once a week, the “THP is just different.” thought comes through my mind, and it’s true. Great community, unmatched events for members to participate in. Truly incredible.

Very well put.

WWG in October is going to blow my mind. I think I know how great it is going to be, but also know there’s no way to fully grasp it until I step foot on the grounds of Vic. I cannot freaking WAIT.

Yea, do what you’d normally do for sure, but when it comes time to do your fitting, just swing like you swing and let the fitting come to you. It will happen.

This is so very zen like. Love it.

Just meant that my driver swing is a constant swirl of change atm ? Trying to find a move that would be the same every time.

You can follow it in the Get low and DS-adapt threads ?
Paul Sack Recap
Good morning all finally winding down from an incredible experience. I am so lost for words and I find it quite difficult to express the amount of gratitude I have for being picked for this experience. First off all the participants were awesome to meet in person. As you have read through the thread a few of them could see I was in way over my head and did everything in their power to make me feel welcome. Sorry to any of you that lost coins on Law and Order but we really did try to compete. @BASSFAN07 and I did ham and egg pretty good and if we would have been able to make some putts that we should have made our pops would have really helped. I can’t say I got lost in the competition side of it as I felt that wasn’t the important part. It is amazing what JB , THP , and UST Mamiya and Danny put into making this experience unbelievable.
As a newcomer I found everything moves as fast as a 1 hour round of golf and it is hard to keep up with it all. @BASSFAN07 really killed it out there with the posting and pictures and he played some really good golf too. Once again thanks for the opportunity THP.
I really enjoy reading through the post event recaps. Cant wait to keep reading feedback on the new shafts and set ups.
