Two weeks ago, Mizuno unveiled the JPX 921 line of irons and if you missed our preview, check it out here. Over the last two weeks, we have been busy in the THP Tech Studio putting each of the four sets to the test.
The lineup consists of the Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro, Forged and Tour. We wanted to not only tell you about the results, but show you the testing and talk you through some swings.
In the video below, we take each set for a test drive and talk a little bit about the tech, but go a step further and compare all four to each other in the wrap up with all of the data.
After watching the swings and hearing about the clubs, which set do you think fits best for your game?
The Details
In Stores: 9/17/2020
Cost: $1000-$1400 depending on set
That’s what I thought you meant but what are you basing that on? Have you hit them both? Or is it the 1 degree stronger?
Basing that on early reviews. There are a number now out and its very early like I said but indications are they spin lower than the predecessor. From smattering of reviews its about 70-200rpm less for 3-5yds gain (7i). Again these are early reviews, and will need more conclusive data. Still it isnt surprising if that turns out to be the case. The 919HMP was excellent for what it is and its going to be hard to improve on.
Anyone with the 919HMP I think they’re sitting pretty unless they want something new and shiny just for the sake. And those looking to move into the HMP after missing out on the 919 series doubt they’d go wrong.
edit:spelling
very… very possible.
200 rpm is nothing to worry over as long as peak height and descent are solid.
I don’t read or see other reviews but if people are saying these are lower spin without discussing the loft and style change they should not be reviewing golf clubs. ? On that note, as we showed in another video last week, the ball can impact spin as much as anything else.
70 rpms of spin can be the difference in a few blades of grass.
Hope that helps.
The table view of @Canadan video showed the HMP spun the same (a fraction more really) at the Forged, which is impressive. I typically head about fliers with hollow body clubs but with that much spin I’m hopeful it won’t be an issue
You could always switch to a move spinning ball i.e. Bridgestone Tour B X to the XS for example
Once I get fixated on a change all bets are off with the current sticks, even though they are playing just fine. The 921 will get a good hard test and need to beat out the Honma TR20P and maybe the Titleist T100S, I have kind of given up on the TM 770 after the not so glowing reviews here and my own dismal 15 swings with them, not really a fair test but it is what it is.
I would say that is actually a blessing in disguise because if you were fit on 8/31 but they didn’t ship for weeks…. yikes.
That’s a really good point.
i’m gonna guess hot metal pro all the way, with mmt 90 shafts. for the low low price of $3,500
you’re going to pure those, right?
It is a toss up at this point just in my mind either HMP or the forged with paderson 110 shafts. From what he said today that would be about $2,100.
The Hot metal are $50 cheaper per head than the forged or tour alledgedly.
The MMT are actually cheaper than the Paderson so they will get a look if they have something over 100 gr to try.
I am going in with my eyes closed and will try anything, but they have to clearly beat the Honma TR20 P I built myself with the Paderson 95 or I am walking.
And as far as the puring goes I told him if he can put the exact same shaft in the same head one pured and one not and prove to me there is a actual difference for my swing I would do it. He said that may only be possible at the main office since they screw in their test heads, which I am still not buying as they screw in the same way with all heads so pure the shaft and epoxy it screwed in place…ta da now you can prove your hype. As a Salesman it seems like common sense to be able to prove it…that is if it matters to most mortals.
ok will you committ to the group here and now a detailed report on HMP vs Forged submitted here with 24 hours of your test??
Those numbers were strictly ball data, so it was not measuring the dynamic loft of the club at all. I’m willing to bet they were not dotted either. the Quad was reading ball launch.
Correct.
We can dot anything anybody would like of course, but generally for a review what the ball does makes the most sense for golfers to follow.
Sure but as a rule no ones cares what I think about anything here, but I see you are new here so I will give it a good try if you don’t mind the opinion of a old guy.
I should have a couple more heads in to add in also the Titleist T100S and the Honma TR20 V will get a swing or three.
21 Launch for a 30 degree club, let’s just agree to call it that (vs. 7-iron), is pretty high. He was launching them 120+ feet in the air, so it make sense. Usually, we see about 1/2 the loft of the club as a rule of thumb, so I’m not used to seeing that high a launch, and was curious if it was a system thing or player.
I was launching the 5 iron (24 degree) at 16.4 and the 8 iron (35 degree) at 19.8 if those data points assist you.
For what it’s worth, that launch window is exactly what my baseline would validate, on course, on dotted, and off dotted. I’m a high ball hitter by trade.
Adding in my MP-20 numbers with fully dotted heads for those who haven’t seen the range days;

1) That was still a fun RangeDays convo for us to have, I loved it!
2) HIGH ball hitter. No errors here
You mad man.
To me it is not as noticeable on the HM vs the G410. The iron just feels sleeker as well
I thought about a HM/HMP combo set. But the 921 HMP’s are larger in the long irons than the 919’s, so it might not be necessary to do a combo. I don’t find my 919 HM’s to be too large at all, they just have a bit more offset than I’d like. If it weren’t for that, I’d be looking at the HM’s again.
I’ve head $125/club for HM irons. Is there an upcharge for graphite?
That was @Canadan
I saw a post where all the specs and shafts options were goign to be avaiable to everyonbe on 8/31.
I wanna say it was somewhere on their website (US oe EUR).
I don’t remember which.
I was looking for hosel size.
I know my stats may not matter a whole lot in the grand scheme but there isn’t much explanation other than these irons are amazing. Arccos said I was +4.0 strokes gained compared to my handicap this past round I’ve shot below my average score for the last 20 rounds every round they have been in the bag. All I changed was the irons.
That’s awesome @Molten
Nice! Are you playing 4-GW?
5-GW. I’m no glutton for punishment
Over the moon over here. My miss has been low with these and it hasn’t been all that punishing. Toe side or high on the face suffers a bit. All very, very playable.
They have appeal! Waiting to hit them I am coming up with crazy combo ideas. PW-8 Tour, 7-6 Forged, 5 HMP, 4 HM. It would be like a big old JPX921 family party every round, a bunch of them bent out of shape (pun intended). ??
I haven’t played a combo set in YEARS, so if I were to game these i’d probably like to try a combo set. my thought is hmp 4-7, 921f 8-gw. as great as the tours look, my interpretation of some of the info and reviews out there is the tours are kind of their own thing, whereas the rest of the lineup was designed to be cohesive. the 921f seem small enough and smartly designed to be up to the challenge in the scoring clubs.
